Major General Shi Ying is an old veteran who participated in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the War of Liberation, and the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea; he has experienced hundreds of battles, dared to speak the truth, and can fight hard battles and win battles well. During the Liaoshen Campaign, he served as the political commissar of the 2nd Column 5th Division (later reorganized as the 116th Division of the 39th Army). In 1964, he was appointed executive deputy director of the Logistics Department of the Shenyang Military Region. After retiring in 1983, he dictated his rich experience of leading his troops into a recording, which was compiled by his children into a book called "Shi Ying's Self-Description". Although the smoke of gunfire has long since passed, the historical authenticity and realistic education described by General Shi Ying are still valuable spiritual wealth. On September 10, 1948, the Liaoshen Campaign began. The headquarters of the Northeast Field Army issued an order: the 5th Division of the 2nd Column was assigned to the 3rd Column to attack Yixian County, and the 5th Division was the main attack.

On September 29, the purge of the outer strongholds of YiXian County began. The 11th Company of the 14th Regiment quickly conquered the Old Yan family, a stronghold on the southwestern outskirts of the city, and completely annihilated more than 100 enemy defenders. On the 30th, the 10th Company of the 14th Regiment launched an attack on the Wujia Xiaomiao, a strong stronghold southwest of the city, and under the condition of being suppressed by enemy fire on three sides, it exploded eight times in a row, destroying all five enemy fortifications and outer trenches, conquering five enemy bunker groups in one fell swoop, and occupying the stronghold in only two hours. At this time, there were less than twenty people left in the whole company, and under the leadership of deputy instructor Shen Minghe, they fought bloodily, repelled seven counterattacks of the enemy, and killed and wounded more than 450 enemy people. After the war, Shen Minghe, Wang Fengjiang and eight other comrades were honored with three major merits, and the column awarded the title of "Steel Company" to the 10th Company.

After the breakthrough of the 9th Division, it will put more pressure on the enemy in the city. The second is that the main force of your regiment will directly attack the east gate of the city and meet the 8th Division attacking in the east of the city as soon as possible, and if the 8th Division does not go well, we should cooperate inside and outside to assist them in attacking the city. I told the other two regimental commanders again: The 14th Regiment followed behind the 13th Regiment, and after entering the city, attacked in a northeast direction, completely severing the enemy's defensive deployment, and eliminating and capturing the enemy north of the city. The 15th Regiment, behind the 14th Regiment, entered the city and attacked in a northwesterly direction, first annihilating the enemy's mountain artillery battalion in the northwest of the city, preventing it from interfering with the siege of the 8th and 9th Divisions, and then opening the West City Gate to go out of the city and destroying the enemy at the substation base in the west of the city.
Enlightenment: In combat, large corps must clearly define the deployment of troops, the division of tasks, and strictly organize and coordinate in order to form a strong combat effectiveness. At 9:30 a.m. on October 1, we launched a general offensive against the enemy defending Yixian County. The artillery regiment concentrated its artillery fire to blow open a gap more than thirty meters wide in the city wall, and the division's mountain artillery battalion destroyed the nearby bunker group. Under the cover of artillery, the 13th Regiment continuously removed seven obstacles laid by the enemy in less than half an hour, opening up a passage for the assault troops. The 1st and 2nd companies of the 13th Regiment took only a few minutes to plant the red flag on the head of Yixian County. The fighters of the 13th Regiment rushed towards the city along the gap in the city wall, and the 14th and 15th Regiments followed suit to join the battle in depth. When I passed through the gap in the city wall with the troops of the 14th Regiment of the Second Echelon, I was blocked by two heavy machine guns resurrected by the enemy bunker in the southwest corner, causing nearly 200 casualties to the 14th Regiment.

In the street battle, it is necessary to seize one building, one courtyard after another, and street by street, although the tactical means of climbing over the wall, digging holes, and breaking doors are adopted, but the enemy is in the dark, we are in the light, and the casualties will accumulate into a lot. The "denseness and sparseness" of the attack formation should proceed from the actual situation of the battle, and when suppressing the enemy's light and heavy firepower and overcoming the obstacles of the position is very smooth, it is possible to concentrate and quickly launch an impact.
