Collection Reproduction: Three Rare Books of Ye Dehui under the Transformation of Printing Technology

Time: January 29 (Saturday) 9:30-11:30

Venue: ZOOM Meeting (ID: 9870415883, Password: 243786)

Speaker: Liu Yuanru (Researcher, Institute of Literature and Philosophy, "Academia Sinica")

With the introduction of Western photographic printing technology, the late Qing Dynasty and the early Ming Dynasty experienced a major revolution in printing in the past thousand years, photography is not only used as a technique for portrait reproduction, but also used in publishing and printing, and when copying collections such as good books, inscriptions and ancient paintings, it gradually changes from shadow carving, lithography to Colo print, and has an increasingly perfect realistic image. But is precision reproduction technology adding value to culture? Or is the Aura disappearing, as Benjamin predicted? On the other hand, technology is not only closely related to the production and creation of things, but also affects the way human beings live, standardizes the behavior of users, and constructs life situations and choices that were not originally there, shaping different ideas? Ye Dehui (1864-1927) has always been regarded as a collector and publisher of conservative ideas, from his first publication of "Shan Hai Jing Tu Zan" at the age of 26 to his deathbed "Star Destiny True Plain". It is worth noting that Ye Dehui not only has both a collector and a publisher, but also experienced the Chinese and Western technological revolutions from letterpress photocopying to flat-panel photographic printing books in just over a decade, and also coincided with the institutional transformation from the empire to the Republic of China in the past two thousand years. The dialectic between the old and the new, the truth and the real, technology has not only changed Ye's publishing kingdom and the view of the relationship between things, the world and the self, but also accommodated Ye's desire for things, as well as the movement of knowledge and classification methods under the cultural exchange between China and the West, and also provided an observation perspective of Chinese modernity.

Li Gui and Around the World New Record: A Journey to the World at Dusk in the Empire

When: Thursday, February 3 at 8:00

Speaker: MelCher (Professor of History, Johns Hopkins University, USA)

In 1876, Li Gui, who was still a clerk in the Qing Dynasty Customs, set off from Shanghai to Philadelphia to participate in the 100th Anniversary Exposition of the Founding of the United States. This trip around the world led Li Gui to write the best-selling book "Around the World New Record". If we set aside the teleological description of modern Chinese history and revisit Li Gui and his New Journey Around the Globe in the context of the late imperial global history, how should we read this travelogue? This lecture will attempt to break the rigid binary system and rethink the status of the late Qing dynasty and self-expression as a world of people.
