Beijing's first failed bid for the Olympic Games, Deng Xiaoping: Expected.

With the Beijing Winter Olympics about to open, China will become the ninth country in the world to host both the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics, and Beijing will become the only city to date to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

In December 1978, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee, and the historical process of China's reform and opening up began to take off. In February 1979, on the eve of China's return to membership in the International Olympic Committee, Deng Xiaoping, in a meeting with Japan's Kyodo News Agency President Yoshiji Watanabe, laid out China's vision of hosting the Olympic Games within 10 years. He told Muso Watanabe: "First of all, we must solve the problem of Taiwan's qualifications. This problem is solved, of course we want to become a member of the Olympic Games, and China is preparing to participate in the Moscow Olympics. The Olympic Games are held once every four years, in 1984 and 1988. Not necessarily in 1984, but maybe in 1988 we could afford to host the Olympics in China. Conditions were a little more difficult in 1984, but they were ripe in 1988. ”

In addition, when Deng Xiaoping met with the leaders of North Korea and Cambodia and the "world boxing king" Muhammad Ali, he also mentioned the issue of "China also hosting the Olympic Games", the purpose of which is to keep pace with the pace of reform and opening up.

In 1984, the Chinese sports delegation went to Los Angeles to participate in the 23rd Olympic Games, achieving a breakthrough of zero gold medals for the first time, and the whole country rejoiced. At that time, Deng Xiaoping once said to other CPC leaders with deep feelings: "Now it seems that whether sports are done well or not, the impact is too great, and it is a manifestation of a country's economy and civilization." It has inspired so many people, attracted so many spectators, listeners, to get sports up. ”

In 1990, Beijing hosted the 11th Asian Games, and Deng Xiaoping was very concerned about running the Asian Games well. As for China's efforts to host the Olympic Games at an early date, Deng Xiaoping was even more impressed. In July of that year, Deng Xiaoping reiterated this good wish when he inspected the newly built National Olympic Sports Center.

According to Wu Shaozu, then director of the Chinese National Sports Commission, "I reported to Comrade Xiaoping on the preparations for the Asian Games, and Comrade Xiaoping thought further; he did not talk about the Asian Games, but asked another question with concern, 'Has China's determination to host the Olympic Games been made?' Why don't you dare to do this? The construction of such sports facilities, if the Olympic Games are not held, is equivalent to half wasted. I know that Comrade Xiaoping said as early as the 1970s that China should host the Olympic Games. However, in the case that the Asian Games have not yet been completed, some comrades still have doubts about whether to bid for the Olympic Games. Because of Comrade Xiaoping's interrogation, the decision to bid for the Olympic Games was promoted. ”

After Deng Xiaoping's speech, China's first bid to host the Olympic Games was put on the agenda. On September 22, 1990, at the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Beijing, then-Chinese President Yang Shangkun formally expressed China's desire to host the 2000 Olympic Games to IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

In the stands of the Beijing Asian Games, the audience put up a banner that read, "Run the Asian Games, Look Forward to the Olympic Games." At the closing ceremony of the Beijing Asian Games, a banner that reads "Asian Games succeed, everyone looks forward to the Olympics" appeared in the audience again.

Beijing's first bid to host the Olympic Games, with the theme slogan of "an open China looks forward to the Olympic Games", combined the main theme of the Olympic Games and the country's reform and opening up, showing China's determination to integrate into the world and integrate with the world.

On September 16, 1993, the Beijing Olympic bidding delegation that arrived in Monte Carlo, Monaco for the final sprint, immediately felt the solemn atmosphere here. On the same day, the European Parliament followed the practice of the US Congress three months ago and passed a resolution to oppose China's hosting of the Olympic Games in the name of human rights; at the press conference, foreign journalists successively raised one offensive and provocative question after another; and the Australian reporter even threw out a news that China would boycott the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, which obviously had ulterior motives. For a time, in Monte Carlo, opposition to China's hosting of the Olympic Games was very loud.

At 2:30 a.m. Beijing time on September 24, 1993, Samaranch announced that Sydney, Australia, had won the right to host the 2000 Olympic Games, and Beijing had led the first three rounds of voting, and lost by two votes in the final sprint.

This morning, a sign was posted on the door of the Beijing morning subway: "The bid for the Olympic Games has not yet been successful, and comrades still have to work hard." "People's Daily" published an article "Unswervingly Going global" to say: "In the future, China will be more open-minded, welcome guests from all over the world, make friends from five continents, and unswervingly go to the world." An open China looks forward to the Olympic Games, and an open China is fully capable of running the Olympic Games well. Hosting the Olympic Games, whether today or in the future, is a strong desire of the Chinese people. ”

Beijing's first failed bid to host the Olympic Games, and its solemn expression wrote Chinese regrets. At the National Day event, deng Xiaoping asked Beijing about the Olympic bid as soon as he saw Wu Shaozu. Wu Shaozu said: "There are people abroad who are tricking ghosts. After a moment of silence, Deng Xiaoping said in a calm tone: "It does not matter if the application is not successful, sum up the experience." Deng Xiaoping also said that when he learned the news of Beijing's defeat in the Olympic bid, his first reaction was also to cause trouble. Deng Xiaoping also said: "The West cannot rely on any promise, and this truth must be managed for many years, do not easily believe the promise, and do not believe what you have not received." ”

On October 31, 1993, when Deng Xiaoping visited Beijing for the last time, he asked about Beijing's bid for the Olympic Games, and when Zhang Baifa, executive vice mayor of Beijing Municipality, said that "some people abroad are making trouble," Deng Xiaoping said: "This is expected, and the key is to get our own affairs right." The doctor who accompanied him told Zhang Baifa: "On the day of the vote, the old man still wanted to watch the live broadcast on TV, so we mobilized him to sleep." But when we got up in the morning, we asked what the result of the vote was, and we answered unsuccessfully. He said that there is nothing remarkable about what is expected, the key is to get our own things right! ”

After Deng Xiaoping's death, in 1998, the Party Central Committee decided to bid again for the Olympic Games in Beijing. In 2001, Beijing won the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games. In 2015, Beijing won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
