[Hardcore chefs in history: never trained, but shot down several Japanese fighters by one!] When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in the United States, they certainly did not expect that an African-American chef who had never received military training would be able to shoot down several of their warplanes.

And the first black man in the United States to receive the Cross of Honor, the highest honor in the United States, became the first black person in the United States to receive this medal, and it was Doris Miller.

Growing up on a farm, Miller was eager to travel from an early age, and in order to support his family, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1939, working his way from being a canteen attendant on board a ship to becoming a chef, earning third class merit and stationed at Pearl Harbor.

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor while Miller was washing clothes on the deck of an aircraft carrier. The sudden attack caught everyone off guard, and the strong Miller carried several wounded men to safety.

Subsequently, Miller, who had never been trained, operated an anti-aircraft gun and opened fire on the Japanese fighters, shooting down several fighters until they ran out of ammunition and were forced to abandon the ship.

Miller was also awarded the Cross for his outstanding performance in the war, awarded the Cross by the Secretary of the Navy.

But in 1943, while Miller was sailing with an aircraft carrier in the Gilbert Islands, the mothership was hit and sunk by a torpedo, and Miller died.

On June 30, 1973, the U.S. Navy named a frigate "Miller" in honor of Miller, and Miller became an iconic symbol of black Americans fighting for civil rights.

Pictured here is a portrait of Miller, taken in 1942.
