The whole text revolves around "death" and "imminent death", but the fundamental theme is Harry's journey back to the past, from the past to the present. In the end, he failed to achieve the goal in his heart, and he regretted it to the extreme before dying. At the end of the story, he dies in a dream: flying in a plane to the top of Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak.

As a young man, his ambitions failed to the material pleasures of money, he became arrogant, depraved, lazy, and his motivation to write deteriorated. He wanted to go to Africa in search of hope and courage, eager to start over, to find what he had lost.
In the text, the picture switches back and forth between reality and dream, and the events Harry encounters in reality contain subtle expressions. If gangrene is formed after the necrosis of the tissue due to the influence of secondary rotten bacteria and other factors, the "gangrene" in the text can be seen as a manifestation of Harry's physical and inner corruption and depravity; "vultures" and "hyenas" are warnings of death. In his memories, he remembered the stories he had to write when he was young, the army, the train station, his lovers, the neighborhoods where he lived, Paris, and so on. The text reveals his attitude toward the world, arguing that "life is swallowed up by money, and love becomes a pile of dung." On Mount Kilimanjaro, with the fear of death and the desire to survive, he found that he was blinded by materialism, and he wanted the life he longed for.
Harry comes to Kilimanjaro in search of a way to "live", but gets the expression "death". By describing the memories, inner reflections and regrets of a person who is dying, the full text allows the reader to feel Harry's attitude towards death and the psychological process of death from fear to calm.
In fact, the author Hemingway's ten-minute adventure travel is inspired by his own real experiences.
