Structural contradictions in employment still highlight unemployment rate of 15.4% in June 16-24 census

Beijing, July 15 (China Youth Daily) -- Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics today shows that the surveyed unemployment rate of the population aged 16-24 in June reached 15.4%. In this regard, Liu Aihua, spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics and director of the Department of Comprehensive Statistics of the National Economy, said that this is because the graduation season in June has arrived, the number of college graduates entering the labor market to seek employment is increasing, and the employment pressure has increased significantly, driving the youth unemployment rate to rise significantly.

Overall, the employment situation in the country is relatively stable. In the first half of the year, 6.98 million new jobs were created in cities and towns across the country, completing 63.5% of the annual target. In June, the national urban survey unemployment rate was 5.0%, unchanged from May and down 0.7 percentage points from the same period last year. The unemployment rate of the local household registration census is 5.0%, and the unemployment rate of the foreign household registration population survey is 5.1%.

Liu Aihua said that the decline in the unemployment rate in urban surveys is mainly attributable to the sustained and stable recovery of the economy and the policy of stabilizing employment. From the perspective of the unemployment rate of the main working-age population, it is more prominent, and the unemployment rate of the main working-age population aged 25-59 fell to 4.2% in June, 1 point lower than the same month of the previous year. From the perspective of monthly intervals, it also continues to fall.

The structural contradictions of employment are still prominent. In June, the survey unemployment rates for the 16-24-year-old population and the 25-59-year-old population were 15.4% and 4.2%, respectively. Among them, the unemployment rate of urban youth aged 16-24 increased by 1.6 percentage points from the previous month, unchanged from the same month last year. "Among them, the unemployment rate of college and above 20-24 years old is even higher." Liu Aihua said.

As the economy continues to recover steadily, so does the labor market. Liu Aihua said that the employment volunteers of college graduates this year are more stable than last year, and the activity of job hunting has increased significantly. However, it should also be noted that the scale of fresh graduates from colleges and universities this year reached 9.09 million, a record high, and the total employment pressure is indeed relatively large.

"In the next stage, we still need to adhere to the employment priority policy, continue to implement the policy of reducing burdens and stabilizing posts and expanding employment, strengthen employment assistance to key groups, optimize employment services, expand employment capacity, and consolidate the situation of employment stability." She said.
