On January 22, According to Reuters, Ultium Cells, a joint venture between GM and LG Energy Solutions, will announce next week that it will invest more than $6.5 billion in Michigan to build a new electric truck and battery plant.
According to the Michigan Strategy Fund, plans to consider GM and Ultium Cells' plans at next Tuesday's board meeting to invest $6.5 billion to add 4,000 jobs at its plants in the michigan capital, Lansing and Orion towns.
In December 2021, GM was revealed to have proposed a $2.5 billion battery plant with LG Energy Solutions near Lansing to add 1,700 jobs. The two companies are expected to share the costs. GM also expects to invest at least $4 billion in the town of Orion to produce electric pickup versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, the sources said. A major plant expansion is expected to be completed by 2025.
GM has said the Wallace Battery Innovation Center, located in the technology campus of Warren, Michigan, the largest U.S. automaker, covers nearly 300,000 square feet (27,900 square meters) and is expected to open in mid-2022 and begin manufacturing prototype batteries in the fourth quarter.
Its initial goal is to make the range of electric vehicles reach 500-600 miles (804.67 km - 965.60 km) and reduce the cost of batteries by about 60%.
