Intel has chosen to build a new chip production site in Ohio, USA, which will cost at least $20 billion. At a time when users are facing shortages of critical components, Intel has stepped up efforts to increase chip production in the United States.

According to people familiar with the matter, Intel said that the new factory near Columbus will initially have two chip factories and will directly employ 3,000 people, while creating more jobs in the construction industry and nearby businesses. But that may just be the beginning.

Intel isn't the only company expanding U.S. production. TSMC began construction last year on a $12 billion complex about 50 miles from Intel's factory near Phoenix. Samsung Electronics chose Taylor, Texas, to invest $17 billion there to build a factory scheduled to start construction in 2022.

Intel's strategy is based in part on a bet that Intel can compete with TSMC and Samsung in chip manufacturing to produce chips for other companies. For most of its founding, Intel only produced microprocessors and other chips that it designed and sold itself.

This strategy is risky because Intel has lagged behind its Asian competitors in packing more circuits on each silicon, improving the performance of devices such as smartphones and PCs. Intel's CEO has said that Intel is expected to catch up in the next few years, but this will not be easy because these companies continue to develop their own new products.
