Layer after layer of paint, Mary Jane Mary Jane Ansell built her paintings, and her figures range from gentle carelessness to boldness and confidence. Mary Jane Mary Jane Ansell is an English female painter. Born in 1972 in Drayton, Shropshire, England, in a small town in Drayton, Market. She received her BSc in Illustration from the University of Brighton in 1994. Her grandmother was an artist, and Ansel grew up in a family where everyone supported her choice to pursue an artistic career. She was shortlisted for the prestigious BP Portrait Award in 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2012 and has been selected for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition and the Threadneedle Award several times.
Another notable aspect of her work is that she edits the environment, thus paying more attention to the central character and the object with which she interacts. She usually works on several pieces at once, as this prevents her from focusing too much on one piece and distorting any issues that are not proportional, but also keeps her productive.
Ansel is already a mature artist, but that doesn't stop her from wanting more. Since she shows a lot, there are plenty of time commitments and deadlines. They are sometimes helpful because they provide more focus, but sometimes it is almost impossible for them to try new directions. Therefore, one of the goals of the artist is to complete the work without thinking in order to explore further. Recently, she has begun to introduce more color and drama to her work and to do greater work, so she spends less time on the background.
Ansel loves engaging narratives and captures an inclusive but dramatic moment, her work draws influence from numerous inspirations, and her photographers become characters full of narrative, Ansel says, in the process of working with them, sometimes autobiographically, drawing inspiration from childhood memories or her reactions to current complex political and gender issues, but also from the language of classical portraiture to the world of haute couture, admiring a refined technique that evokes the past but has a firm modern perspective.
Based in the UK, she has held international exhibitions in London, New York, Singapore and Los Angeles, and more recently for groups and individuals. Her work is collected by private and public institutions around the world, including the permanent collections commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery, the Brighton and Hove Museums, and the Joe Lewis Collection.
Ansel was named one of the "100 Figurative Painters Currently Working" by Buzz Feed in 2017, and her work has appeared on the covers of many magazines, including American Art Collector and a number of recent novels, including New York Times bestselling author Tiffany Baker's "Gilly Salt Sisters" and Adam Ante's recently released album. Adam Ante is the Blue and Black Horseman in Marrying the Gunslinger's Daughter.
