How will the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics achieve the "low-carbon Winter Olympics"?

Shijiazhuang, China, January 20, 2020 -- As the beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is approaching, as an international sports event held after the mainland's commitment to "strive to achieve carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060", the concept of "green Olympics" runs through the preparation work. So, how will the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics achieve the "low-carbon Winter Olympics"?

"Low-carbon Winter Olympics" refers to the full use of renewable energy power generation technology, building energy saving technology and recycling technology in the construction of Winter Olympic venues and the holding of events to minimize the carbon emissions caused by Olympic events.

On June 23, 2019, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, together with the Beijing Municipal Government and the Hebei Provincial Government, jointly issued the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Low Carbon Management Work Plan. The plan puts forward specific goals for four aspects: low-carbon energy, low-carbon venues, low-carbon transportation, and low-carbon standards.

The Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee has formulated 18 measures in response to the above four aspects to minimize the carbon emissions generated by the Beijing Winter Olympics. At the same time, in view of the unavoidable carbon emissions of the Beijing Winter Olympics, four carbon neutrality measures were formulated, including forestry carbon sequestration in Beijing and Zhangjiakou, independent action by enterprises, and the generalized carbon system.

Since the official launch of the low-carbon work, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee has worked closely with the Beijing Municipal and Hebei Provincial Governments to form a joint force, and various measures have been steadily promoted and achieved phased results, including: all venues to achieve renewable energy utilization; all venues use 100% green electricity; the construction of venues to fully meet green building standards; the construction of a low-carbon transportation system during the games, and promote the use of electric vehicles and hydrogen energy vehicles in various competition areas; the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee took the lead in demonstrating and settling in the Shougang Industrial Theme Park. Reduce carbon emissions from new office sites; smoothly promote forestry carbon sequestration projects to leave a green Winter Olympic legacy for future generations; and officially launch the GSP for the Winter Olympics.

The Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee also officially released the "Low-Carbon Winter Olympics" WeChat Mini Program on July 2, 2020 National Low Carbon Day, calling for the practice of low-carbon behaviors such as green travel, garbage classification, self-prepared shopping bags, organic light food, and love to use accompanying cups, and encouraging and guiding the public to establish a green and low-carbon lifestyle.
