After graduating from university in 1984, Zhou Yingcao began 8 years of on-site technical work in the drilling team. On the first day of his employment, he was led by his master to the drilling team and stationed in the well for one year. He regarded everyone on the well team as a teacher, asked the drillers of the drilling team for on-site experience, continued to practice observation and pondering, and effectively solved the complex problems such as card drilling that often occurred at the drilling site at that time through the development and application of the drilling shock device and its supporting technology.

After 1986, he was stationed in Hailar, Chaoyanggou, Xujiaweizi and other difficult conditions of the exploration area for a long time, responsible for the prevention and treatment of complex accidents in deep well drilling, drilling speed, implementation of unbalanced drilling technology, etc., and solved the technical problems of the drilling site. Through the development and application of drill string vibration reduction technology such as "drill tool two-way shock absorber", the serious damage caused by the three-dimensional vibration of the deep well drill string to the drilling tool has been solved, and it is still being promoted and applied, and the benefits are remarkable. He presided over the design and led the on-site implementation of the drilling technology research and on-site construction operations of the first and second unbalanced wells in Daqing, and achieved a major breakthrough in the exploration of deep gas in the Songliao Basin.

In 2002, as the project director of the National Science and Technology Research Project, in view of the many drilling engineering problems faced by the oilfield entering the late development of high water content, a set of supporting technologies for high water content late drilling engineering was innovatively formed, reaching the international advanced level, of which the cementing technology of the thin differential layer of the adjustment well reached the international leading position. After the promotion and application of this technology in Daqing Oilfield, it has created direct economic benefits of hundreds of millions of yuan. In 2005, this achievement won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.

In April 2011, as the director of the national science and technology major special project and the head of the innovation team, Zhou Yingcao presided over the design and led the implementation of the drilling technology research and on-site construction operation of the first fine pressure control drilling well in China, Penglai 9 Well, and achieved a major breakthrough in fine pressure control drilling technology and equipment.
