Hong Kong, 20 Jan (China News Service) -- The Hong Kong police held a press conference on the 20th, saying that the Hong Kong police and the Macao Police Department recently launched a joint crackdown on cross-border money laundering, arresting a total of 3 people in the two places, involving an amount of 14 million yuan (Hong Kong dollars, the same below).

Senior Inspector Kwok Kin Lok of the Commercial Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police said at a press conference on the same day that the police had earlier received intelligence from the Macau Police That a female victim living in Macau had received a fraudulent call in September 2021, saying that she was involved in a number of money laundering cases in the mainland and was wanted by the mainland law enforcement agencies. The female victim then provided the bank information and password to the other party for the other party to investigate, but then found that the bank's 14 million yuan deposit had been transferred, so she called the police for help.

Kwok went on to say that after the investigation by the Macau police, it was found that the 14 million yuan involved in the case had been transferred to multiple bank accounts in Macau, and then dispersed to some Hong Kong bank accounts. After obtaining intelligence, the Hong Kong police intervened in the investigation and launched an arrest operation on 19 January, arresting two local men, aged 27 and 68, who had bank accounts in Hong Kong and received and processed about $11.8 million in funds for "disposing of property known or believed to represent gains from indictable crimes" (commonly known as money laundering). On the same day, the Macau police also arrested a 21-year-old woman suspected of accepting fraudulent money and transferring her to Hong Kong.

Police said the case was still under investigation and could not rule out more arrests. Money laundering is a serious offence punishable by 14 years' imprisonment and a fine of $5 million upon conviction. (End)
