"I'm both a 'daddy' and a 'wet nurse'!" Holding a two-month-old small South China tiger, Chen Zhe, a 38-year-old keeper at the Changsha Ecological Zoo, said self-deprecatingly. The little South China Tiger in his arms looked a little agitated because of the stranger who visited, and screamed .

In order to take care of this tiger boy, Chen Zhe circled it 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday. "I have to spend the Spring Festival with this little guy!" Chen Zhe muttered to himself.

The South China tiger is a subspecies of tiger endemic to China, also known as the "Chinese tiger". It is extinct in the wild and is listed as the first of the top ten endangered species in the world.

On November 22, 2021, the South China Tiger "Xiaohua" of Changsha Ecological Zoo gave birth to a South China tiger cub. Initially fed by the mother tiger, on the fifth day, the keepers found that the mother tiger had "abandoned the baby", regardless of her own tiger cubs. In order to ensure that this cub can survive healthily, the park decided to artificially breed young tiger cubs, which is the first artificial breeding of South China tiger cubs in Changsha Ecological Zoo. Chen Zhe took on this heavy responsibility and stayed in the nursery for 24 hours.

Chen Zhe changed his overalls before entering the Xiaohua South Tiger breeding room.

Every morning at 8 o'clock, Chen Zhe had come to the building early, changed into his overalls, and started the day's work.

The Small South China Tiger was placed in a warm room, and as soon as he saw Chen Zhe coming, the Little South China Tiger followed the smell and pasted it to his side, standing meekly at his feet and hugging his thigh. As soon as Chen Zhe picked up the little tiger, it climbed onto Chen Zhe's shoulder, and it was incredibly intimate.

Chen Zhe helped Xiaohua South Tiger defecate.

On the table in Chen Zhe's room were several bottles, some for feeding water and some for feeding. How many spoonfuls of milk powder are put at a time, how many milliliters of water are put in, and what time to help it defecate, Chen Zhe knows it well. Initially, the Small South China Tiger needed to adjust the milk powder 7 times a day, and add calcium, minerals, vitamins, and after 50 days of growth, the food began to add minced meat. "Also pay attention to the indoor temperature is maintained at 24 ° C -25 ° C, each feeding of water about 10 ml." Every step, Chen Zhe is meticulous. Under the careful feeding of Chen Zhe, the weight of the small South China tiger has steadily increased, reaching 5.6 kg at present.

Although the little tiger is only two months old, its claws are relatively sharp, and Chen Zhe's left hand has a scar about 5 centimeters long at the position of the tiger's mouth. "It was caught by the little cub, and I really looked at it as a 'son'." Chen Zhe quipped, "The little tiger is like a child, sometimes naughty, sometimes cute, sometimes spoiled." In Chen Zhe's view, "As long as there is patience and love, the beast can also feel the kindness of people." ”

Chen Zhe teased the small South China Tiger.

"It's not like family affection, it's not like friendship, this kind of beauty makes people very warm." This is Chen Zhe, who has 13 years of breeding experience, from the bottom of his heart.

"Watching the little tiger grow up healthy, there is a sense of accomplishment, but in the face of his family, there is still some guilt." Chen Zhe has a son and a daughter, and his own children are sick and cannot go home to take care of them. "My wife said that I love tiger cubs more than I love cubs, and I spend more time with tiger cubs than with my son, and I can't be reunited with my family during the Spring Festival this year." There was some helplessness in Chen Zhe's words.

"On weekends, whenever I have time, I take the kids out to play, buy them favorite books, and watch their favorite movies." Chen Zhe said, "Every life needs love and companionship, and these are two of the best gifts." ”
