Danish troops killed four pirates in the Gulf of Guinea

An exchange of fire broke out in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of Nigeria, where a Danish naval patrol aboard the frigate Esbern Snare killed four pirates and wounded a fifth. The incident occurred on Wednesday, about 30 nautical miles south of Nigeria's territorial border, when the Frogman Corps, a Danish Navy special forces unit, intercepted a vessel carrying eight suspected pirates near several merchant ships. The Frogman Legion fired warning shots, but was subsequently shot, prompting Danish soldiers to engage in a shootout that killed four pirates and wounded one. The remaining four pirates were taken to the frigate and no Danish personnel were injured in the incident. The Espern Trap was deployed in the Gulf of Guinea last month due to increased security risks for pirates. The Gulf of Guinea has been one of the world's hotspots of piracy and armed robbery for the past decade. However, according to the IMO Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS), these events declined significantly in the first three quarters of 2021. "We have always said that the Gulf of Guinea is the most dangerous body of water in the world, and last night's situation underscored the gravity of the situation here. The presence of Danish soldiers is absolutely necessary, although it may sound difficult: piracy comes at a price," said Anne Berger, CEO of the Danish Shipping Company. H. Stephenson said WHO is currently in Ghana visiting soldiers deployed in Espernon with the Danish Prime Minister. Tag spirit
