They have directly created the miracle of China's rapid economic development, but they cannot enjoy the fruits of development, are ignored, and even abandoned.

They are a marginalized group of people whom photographers have long sought out and documented, not as evidence of the law or as an indictment of reality. In the field of documentary photography, authenticity depends on witnessing, and photographs undeniably exist as a substitute for memory.

With the advancement of China's industrial modernization process, the victims of work injuries will eventually become history, and as the years go by, future generations need such a set of photos to gain experience and cognition.

The essence of humanistic photography is to focus on the state of human life, and Eclipse tries to show something familiar and disturbing —an uninterpretable expression, a mutilated limb. Photographing or taking a side and moment of the body, it is a simplification of the real events of the work injury, allowing the reader to read the mutilated information.

As the photographer Sontag put it, "Through photographs, the world becomes a series of irrelevant, independent particles; while history, past and present, becomes a series of anecdotes and social news." This worldview denies connection and continuity, but gives every moment a certain mystical quality. ”

"Humanities" are destined to be things of the times that people experience in the social moments and have the value of the times. Eclipse is lost and missing, and what the photograph wants to intuitively illustrate is that the work injury really appeared in that scene, that region, that era—the light and shadow on the photograph were left in that real time and place.

Photographer Q&A

Q1: Your work Eclipse won the 2018 Nguyen Nghi Trung Photography Humanities Award, how do you feel now?

I am really happy, I have seen the works of Teacher Ruan Yizhong in my early years, I have never met, the first Nguyen Yizhong Photography Humanities Award wanted to participate, because of all kinds of busy missed, the second session of the first participation on the award, I feel very lucky.

Q2: When and how did you get introduced to photography?

My mother was a photographer, so I started working with cameras in the late '70s, but it's a far cry from exposure to photography. After I was admitted to the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in the early 90s, my mother bought me the first seagull SLR, and I couldn't help it.

Q3: What was the original intention of this group of works? Why did you choose this genre?

I have been a sudden reporter in the Pearl River Delta for more than ten years, that era was not very peaceful, social security incidents were sudden, all kinds of vulnerable classes were trying to express their demands, among which there were invisible work injuries - pneumoconiosis patients, and visible work injuries - physically disabled people, these two subjects I have continued to pay attention to, under the prosperity of the city, these injured workers are actually marginalized, with unsubsistence compensation instantly disappeared in the mainstream population, as equal life of individuals, they have the right to be paid more attention.

Q4: How long did eclipse last? In the process of creation, what difficulties have you encountered and what unforgettable experiences have you had?

The whole shooting lasted for two or three years, the beginning was not systematic, in the creative process, got the help of some NGOs, but the topic is destined to run counter to mainstream propaganda, many people know and sympathize with the existence of work injuries, but do not want these "negative" to be presented by professional photographers, so every shooting can not be made public, many twists and turns are inconvenient to say.

Q5: Will this group of works continue to be created? Do you have a creative plan for other works?

Due to the change of work, the tracking of "Eclipse" will not continue, with the blessing of the Nguyen Award, I believe that this group will get more people's attention.

I am currently shooting the city where I live, and I have always believed that the subjects around me are the best subjects.

Q6: How do you understand the word "humanities" in the "Nguyen Nghi Trung Photography Humanities Award"?

The "humanities" of the "Ruan Yizhong Photography Humanities Award" is not to interpret a mountain and a river with a lens, but to record the survival and development of people, scenes and things in the context of the big era with feelings.
