The NBA Player of the Week Award was created in the 1979-1980 season, with the first winner being "Dr. J." Julius Irving, when the league selected only one player per week for the honor.
Starting with the 2001-2002 season, two players were selected each week, one from each east and west, and the new rules continue to this day.
James has now won a total of 65 weekly bests, far ahead of others, and now many American media believe that after his retirement, the NBA will name the best of the week award after him. The 37-year-old James is still in excellent athletic form, so is it possible that the total number of the best of the week he will get when he retires will exceed 70?
