According to sources to ESPN, Atletico have drawn up a four-man roster to strengthen right-backs, including Vaz of Valencia, Azpilicueta of Chelsea, Cedric of Arsenal and Semedo of Wolves. Atletico have already started a dialogue with the representatives of the four players in order to look for possible reinforcement opportunities.
Vass and Valencia's contract expires this summer and the players are said to have had some positive talks with Atletico. The 32-year-old defender is thought to be able to leave this month and he was able to compete for a position with Fosarico immediately instead of waiting until after the end of the season. As a result, he became atletico's priority choice.
Azpilicueta's contract with Chelsea is also set to expire at the end of the season, but he can pre-sign contracts with overseas clubs this month. Last December, ESPN reported that Barca were also interested in the 32-year-old defender. Chelsea are concerned that Azpilicueta will refuse the contract extension offered by the club as he may consider returning to play in Spain. However, Chelsea are working to reach a contract extension agreement with the Spanish defender and are unlikely to let him leave the team in this winter window.
As Cedric struggled to get playing time under Arteta, the Portuguese were also among atletico's targets. After joining from Bologna, the 30-year-old Cedric has only started six games this season. Sources say Arsenal are unlikely to let Cedric leave the squad this month, especially in the case of Niles joining Roma and Bellerin joining Betis.
Wolves signed Semedo from Barca in September 2020, and the Premier League club is unlikely to let key players leave. Semedo has played 18 of 22 games in all competitions for Wolves' starters this season, and his contract with the club expires in 2023, but Wolves have the option to renew his contract until 2025.
