THE POST: Newcastle are interested in relegation rivals Burnley striker Chris Wood

According to the Post, Newcastle has approached Burnley striker Wood and hopes he will turn around to solve Newcastle's goal problem.

Newcastle have reportedly sent invitations to Premier League relegation rivals Burnley striker Chris Wood. Newcastle's transfer period this month is bound to be quite difficult, with Trippier already joining the club in the January transfer window.

It is understood that they are looking to sign a striker and Callum Wilson is expected to be sidelined for a while due to injury. The Telegraph reports that Newcastle have approached the New Zealand striker Wood and hope to sign him next week.

Wood has been in Burnley for five seasons and is said to be interested in joining Eddie Howe's side. But there's a problem with burnleys that burnley may be reluctant to sell their players, especially to a team that's also in the relegation zone.

Burnley and Newcastle are 18th and 19th respectively in the Premier League, with 11 points combined, although Sean Decker's side have played two games less. Selling to Newcastle could give them an edge to avoid relegation at the expense of Burnley's strength.

Wood isn't the only striker Newcastle is reportedly watching. Arsenal striker Nketia is an option, Crystal Palace is also keeping an eye on the youngster and the Gunners are still hoping to sign a new deal with him. Liverpool's Origi is another possibility, although the Reds would be better off finding a replacement before selling the Belgian.

Newcastle are also looking to get a centre-back in the January transfer window, with Lille's Botman and Sevilla's Diego Carlos being their targets.

England international Trippier joined the club from Atletico Madrid for £12 million. He made his FA Cup debut on Saturday, but Newcastle were thrilled to be beaten by League One side Cambridge in the FA Cup.
