Due to the rise in natural gas prices, protests and demonstrations have broken out in many parts of Kazakhstan for several days. On January 5, Tokayev signed a presidential decree declaring a state of emergency throughout the country. According to CCTV News reported on the 5th, the Netblocks monitoring system shows that Internet communications throughout Kazakhstan have been interrupted, and a number of media reports have reported that local telephone communications have also been cut off in a large area.

Tokayev said on January 7 that constitutional order across the country has been largely restored and counter-terrorism operations will continue. He also said on the same day that the government had decided to restore Internet services in some areas, but that freedom of the Internet did not mean freedom to spread rumors, slander and inflammatory speech.
