The layout and place names of the old streets and alleys in Wuxi

Looking at the map of Wuxi County published in the 37th year of the Republic of China (1948) on the eve of liberation, we can examine some unusual places, and most of the streets with street names are in the city. There is only one Xichun Street (formerly known as Dongmen Outer Street) outside the East Gate, south long street and north long street outside the south gate city, and outside the west gate is Shed Street and Yuxing Street. Shed Street is named after the rain shelter built in the center of the street, not the shantytown called "Shed Street" that people imagine because of the grass shed. Yuxing Street is called "Yuxing Street" because there are two large fish shops on the street that deal in fish and shrimp aquatic products.

The layout and place names of the old streets and alleys in Wuxi

Outside the North Gate there is a bustling commercial street, North Street, as well as "Houqi Street", one of the oldest streets in Wuxi, and "Jiyu Street", where the grain industry is concentrated. Beitang Street used to be called only "Beitang", and after liberation, it was called "Beitang Street". Because most of the roads outside guangfumen are new roads built after the opening of the railway station, the name "street" is abandoned in the naming, and the place name is "×× Road".

The majority of the city uses lanes as place names, and lanes are generally dominated by residential buildings, with few or no shops. Most of the alleys named after the alleys lead directly to the street at both ends, and the alleys are not long, so they are called streets and alleys. There are many ancient alleys with a long history in the city, such as Shengping Lane, Yu fishy lane, Nanshi Bridge Lane, Zhongshi Bridge Lane, Zhuye Lane, Beichan Temple Lane, Sheng Lane, etc., all of which have a history of hundreds or even thousands of years. Some alley names are still used to this day, such as Tang Lane, Fishy Lane, Zhuye Lane and so on.

"Li" is mostly concentrated in the area outside guangfumen and craft road, which is a building group brought by the emerging industry and commerce in Wuxi in the past hundred years. Compared with the alley, the area is larger and there are many residents. For example, "East Crane Mingli", "Qiandri", and "West Crane Mingli" outside the Guangfu Gate. Most of these residential areas were built in the early years of the Republic of China, and the place name is called "×× Li" in the same way as the residential areas in Shanghai. Some place names with "Li" are named after the dormitories of a large nearby factory for workers, such as "Qingfengli" and "Huaxinli". There is only "Jinshuli" near the Lihuangni Bridge in the city, "Dazhuangli" near the Xinfang Bridge outside the south gate, and only beitang near the "Imperial City" near Wuqiao outside the north gate.

"Lane" generally says that the spacing is short, the road surface is not wide, and it is often only a walkway between houses. The name of the lane is mostly found in the section from Wuqiao to Lianrong Bridge in Beitang, where "QinZhan Lane", "Tang Zhan Lane", "Coal Yard Lane", "Zhang Cheng Lane", "Small Wine Room Lane", "Receiving Official Pavilion Lane" and so on. Next to the short North Avenue, there are "Xiao Yi (Pig) Lane", "Tantou Lane", "Zhen Dou Lane" and "Cloth Lane".

The biggest feature of the lane as a place name is small and narrow, like the "big pier lane" near the South Gate Crossing Pond Bridge, and there is a small lane in the Taosha Lane outside the South Gate, which is less than one meter wide, and the narrowest place only allows one person to pass, and it is very difficult to push a bicycle through. "A line of sky overhead, feet on the green brick floor" is the most vivid portrayal.

There are also some lanes that are dead lanes, because there is only one entrance and exit, so they are also called "real room lanes". Like the "QinJia Lane", "Blocking the Family Lane", "Gu Jia Lane" and "Supervision Lane" on Zhongshan Road, they all belong to the dead lanes of "this road is impassable".

Although some small lanes are only a few tens of meters, there are several toilets in the lanes. The toilet before liberation was an open two-stone squat pit, and from time to time people came to the toilet, and people nearby came to wash the toilet. For example, there is a "xiang alley" in Jiangyin Lane, and there are several toilets in the mouth, and when you pass by here, you "only smell its smell and do not know its fragrance". There is a small lane between Zhongshan Road and the "King Kong Hall" of Chong'an Temple, but there are many toilets in just a few tens of meters. At that time, the back door of wuxi's largest restaurant "Welcome Building" was in this small alley, and the famous "Jin Wanxing Beef Shop" in huangting snacks was opened in longway. This stinking little alley, formerly known as "Shi Lang", Wuxi people unceremoniously simply called it "Shooting Urine (Wuxi Native Dialect Reading Water) Lane".
