Beijing, January 1 (Xinhua) -- On the last day of 2021, the highest temperature in many parts of the United Kingdom fluctuated around 15 degrees Celsius, setting a record for the highest temperature on a New Year's Day.

AFP reported that the weather bureau spokesman Stephen Dixon said the temperature reached 14.9 degrees Celsius at 11 a.m. on December 31, 2021 in the village of Lai hill in Yorkshire, northern England. After that, temperatures in the village of Corningsby in Lincolnshire, East Midlands, reached 15.3 degrees Celsius. This means "today is the warmest New Year's Eve in the UK on record".

The UK's previous New Year's Eve temperature record high was 14.8 degrees Celsius in 2011, which occurred in Wales.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, many parts of the UK "ended 2021 in a very mild atmosphere". Not only are the weather warm, but the way the holidays are also low-key due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with places like London canceling fireworks displays and Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales closing nightclubs and restricting gatherings.

Mike Kenden, from the UK's National Climate Information Centre, said in a summary released by the Met Office that 2021 as a whole would be "slightly warmer and drier" than previous years.

The Bureau of Meteorology said 2021 could squeeze into the top 20 of Britain's warmest years since 1884 was recorded. "Our climate is warming." (Chen Dan)
