On 30 December, Chelsea's official website released financial data for the 20/21 season. Defending Champions League champions Chelsea recorded a loss of £153.4 million in the 20/21 season, with a total revenue of £434.9 million. In the 19/20 season, Chelsea made a profit of 47 million euros.
The loss of matchday income has a greater impact on the club's finances. At the box office, Chelsea grossed just £7.7 million last season, compared to £54.5 million in the 19/20 season. In terms of commercial sponsorship revenue, Chelsea's 20/21 season was £153.6 million, down from £170.4 million in the previous season.
The only source of revenue to see year-on-year growth was broadcast revenue, which increased from £182.5 million to £273.6 million. This increase is due to Chelsea's excellent performance in the Champions League and the fact that some of the 19/20 Premier League matches did not end until July 2020, which was counted as the 20/21 season.
