The 21st Venice International Film Festival took place in August 1960 on the Lido.
In the 1960s, the festival continued to flourish and energize on the basis of the 1950s, thanks mainly to Luigi Chiarini, chairman of the organizing committee, who was then known as the "professor": in the six years from 1963 to 1968, he renewed the spirit and structure of the Venice International Film Festival, organizing a series of films according to strict aesthetic standards, under the influence of social changes, political pressures and the film industry. Chiarini skillfully blends the works of the masters with those of emerging filmmakers in the festival: Godard and Dreier, Bergman and Arthur Penn, Pasolini and Bresson, Akira Kurosawa and Marco Bellocchio, Truffaut and Rossellini... This continued until 1968, the last Golden Lion Award before the 1980s, When it was awarded, "Die Artisten in der Zirkuskuppel: Ratlos," directed by Alexander Kruger and later seen as the opening of a new German film.
