"Character Carriage and Horse Travel Map" is based on the many links of the royal family and nobles in the Warring States period to greet their relatives, truly reproducing life, without any mysterious color, and even without much etiquette. It is considered by many to be the "earliest genre painting" known to China.
The expression of this secular content symbolizes a new vision and aesthetic taste that will gain more and more superiority in Chinese painting. It also directly reflects the later outstanding genre painting art of the past.
The Warring States Period "Figure of Character Carriage and Horse Travel" is a daily tool lacquered outer wall, with a circumference of 87.4 cm and a height of 5.2 cm, excavated from a Chu tomb in Baoshan Mountain, Jingmen, Hubei Province. In addition to the customs depicted, there are two other points that attract attention:
The first is composition, mixing space and time. The whole circle uses five willow trees, swaying with the wind, each with one posture, which not only divides time and space, but also creates an environment; the picture is divided into five different storylines, relatively independent, but also coherent, constituting a complete process of time development. The audience's gaze pans horizontally, allowing them to subjectively and dynamically understand the story of history.
This long-scroll composition method has a strong vitality in ancient Chinese painting.
The first is the vividness of the image. There are many characters in the picture, the dynamics are complex and diverse, and they also show different identities and different looks. In addition, the posture of the horse, the running pig, the dog, and the auspiciousness of the gallop are also concise and vivid.
Lacquer painting art originated from the development of lacquerware with practical tools, mainly natural lacquer, supplemented by metals such as gold, silver, lead, and tin, and materials such as shells and stones. Long-term historical development, especially the combination of modern and contemporary comprehensive materials, the evolution of many techniques, carving, stacking, carving, inlay, grinding, painting and so on. The aesthetic is simple, atmospheric and calm, and often has the duality of painting and craftsmanship.
