Dutch railway company NS wants to discuss with the government and rail maintenance company ProRail the connection of the intercity express line between the coastal city and the German city of Aken. The express line starts in The Hague and passes through Rotterdam, Eindhoven and Heerlen, from where it crosses to Aachen, Germany. Travelers can quickly travel from Aachen to other parts of Germany.
KS NS sees this connection as an important step in increasing the number of cross-border trains.
If successfully put into operation by 2025, 1,250 international travellers will benefit from it every day, and another 2,000 will travel within the Netherlands on the route. NS said the numbers are expected to increase rapidly and save up to 25 minutes from The Hague to Aachen compared to now.
Until then, it is important to discuss the transformation and financing of infrastructure, which is partly due to the suspicion that the line will not be profitable.
The plan to extend the intercity express line from Amsterdam to Heerlen to Aachen proved unworkable, as an intercity express train passes every ten minutes between Amsterdam and Eindhoven.

In addition, Roger van Boxtel ceased to be president of the Dutch railway company NS, and he will be replaced on October 1 by Marjan Rintel, who is still responsible for the day-to-day operations of the railway company.

According to the Supervisory Board, she is someone who "knows the hearts of companies, employees and travelers." Lyntel took over at a time when the Dutch Railways was planning to shrink. The company expects a turnover loss of 4.7 billion euros by 2025 due to the pandemic crisis.
