Yu Meiren (scientific name: Papaver rhoeas) is an annual herb native to Europe, commonly cultivated throughout China, as an ornamental plant.

The bristles that are all stretched are sparse and hairless. The stem is erect, 25–90 cm tall, and branched. The leaf profile is lanceolate or narrowly ovate, pinnately split, lobed lanceolate. The flowers are borne solitarily at the tips of stems and branches, with buds oblong, inverted ovate, drooping; sepals 2, broad oval; petals 4, round, transversely wide oval or wide inverted oval, 2.5–4.5 cm long, full margin, sparsely rounded or at the apex, purple-red, usually with dark purple spots at the base. The capsule is broad inverted ovate, 1–2.2 cm long, glabrous, with inconspicuous ribs. The seeds are mostly kidney-shaped and oblong, about 1 mm long. The flowering period is from March to August.

Flowers and whole plants into the medicine, containing a variety of alkaloids, antitussive, antidiarrheal, analgesic, sedative and other effects; seeds contain more than 40% oil.

The capsule is broad inverted ovate, 1–2.2 cm long, glabrous, with inconspicuous ribs. The seeds are mostly kidney-shaped and oblong, about 1 mm long. The flowering period is from March to August.
