This year is the 75th anniversary of the victory of the world anti-fascist war, if after watching the domestic historical war film "Eight Hundred", you want to see a more realistic World War II movie, I recommend you this Russian film "Hunting T34", which is also based on real events and tells about heroism and desperate survival. In this movie, you can almost smell the breath of war, as if you were in it, experiencing the despair of dying.
I have to say that after watching the trailer for "Hunting T34", I was very curious about this movie. The trailer looks great. I'm curious if the whole movie is really full of such spectacular scenes. Or is the trailer just a collection of the best footage from the movie? It turns out that the film is fascinating from start to finish and will keep you staring at the screen.
When it comes to Russian films, I have to admit that I don't dabble much. But after watching "Hunting T34", I have to say that it was really a surprise. Although the film is not so elaborate, it looks very textured, and the shots are perfect and the performance is solid. It can be said that it has the same charm as a Hollywood blockbuster.
The so-called "T34" was a Soviet tank that was widely used to resist German invasion during World War II. This medium tank, equipped with thickened armor, initially could not compete with the better-built German tanks. However, they had an advantage, the huge tracks made them very tactically flexible, even in the notorious mud ponds of winter, where German tanks were often trapped. The film is therefore a tribute to this legendary tank that defeated Nazi Germany.
If you like thrilling action war movies and want to see how brutal and ruthless Tank Battle is, then you should definitely watch this movie. The standoff between the German tank brigade and Soviet Lieutenant Nikolai (Alexander Petrov) and his team is wonderful and impressive. Close-ups in the limited space of movement in the T34 tank are breathtaking, with a claustrophobic effect.
You'll feel bloody, like those tank men, knowing that you could be hit by deadly shelling at any moment. You can almost smell the sweat of fear. These images are impressive. Especially in life-and-death moments, the slow-motion shots of shells passing through steel armor or concrete look stunning, with a very strong PC game atmosphere. Although slow motion may be used a little too much, it is really shocking.
And, it's not just tank battles that are impressive. The part where Nikolai was imprisoned in a German concentration camp is also wonderful. The scene of the train packed with "prisoners of war" arriving at the concentration camp in the rain was unforgettable. As the sliding doors of the train open, the tragic sight of dead people falling out of the carriage is as shocking as watching a terrible horror movie.
In the concentration camp, Nikolai is found by the German commander Klaus (Vincent Kev) to repair a captured T-34 and asks Nikolai to select several prisoners of war to drive the Soviet tank and serve as targets in German tank combat training. Unbeknownst to Klaus, they also found several shells while carrying the bodies in the tanks. These shells were the impetus for Nikolai to drive his tank during the exercise to escape and try to go to Czechoslovakia.
As a child, I loved playing "Tank Wars" games. "Hunting T34" reminds me of this repeatedly. It's just that video games are a bit more peaceful than this movie. The Hunt for T34 is brutal and shows how heroism makes the impossible possible. In this war frenzy, Nikolai even has a romantic relationship with the Russian translator Anya (Irina Storchenbaum). For Nikolai and his companions, Anya's privilege in the concentration camp undoubtedly helped a lot.
One question I've always been curious about is, what kind of impact does a shell hit a tank and get bounced off would affect the people in the tank? Considering the air pressure and decibels, I believe that must be noisy. It's as if you're sitting in a bronze bell and someone strikes the bell with a heavy hammer. Of course, this question doesn't make much sense for this brilliant and impressive Russian film.
