Born in June 1983, Guo Yan joined the national team in 1998 and won her first singles world title in the 2006 Women's Table Tennis World Cup against Zhang Yining, which was also the highlight of her career, when she won the second time in the 2010 Women's Table Tennis World Cup. Guo Yan has won the team World Cup and team world table tennis championships with the national table tennis many times, but she has also experienced the loss of the women's team final of the 2002 Busan Asian Games in the national table tennis, the final defeat of the women's team of the 2010 Moscow World Table Tennis Championships, Guo Yan's three main players in the first half of her career, Wang Nan, Zhang Yining and Guo Yue, and Li Xiaoxia, Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen in the second half, although she once became the "core" player of the national table tennis women's team, but she did not qualify for the Olympic Games until february 2014 when she retired.
In the 2012 London Olympic Games, when the national table tennis first registered, Guo Yan appeared in the Olympic list and qualified for singles, but in the second registration in May, Ding Ning, who won the Women's Singles Championship of the World Table Tennis Championships and the Women's Table Tennis World Cup Championship in 2011, replaced Guo Yan in the Olympic Games, so that Guo Yan fell in the closest place to the Olympic Games, plus she experienced the dark moments of the two team losses of the national table tennis women's team, known as the "most tragic" world champion of national table tennis. After retiring from the army, Guo Yan did not leave table tennis, and in April 2015, the table tennis club she founded officially opened, and the club is still running today.
