The U.S. Senate voted to pass the debt ceiling increase bill

author:Bright Net

On December 14, local time, the day before the debt ceiling deadline, the U.S. Senate passed a bill with 50 votes in favor and 49 votes against, which raised the national debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion and extended it to 2023 to avoid debt default. The bill will be referred to the House of Representatives for a vote.

Earlier, Congress passed a protocol bill that would allow the Senate to raise the U.S. debt ceiling with a simple majority vote. Under the terms of the bill, Democrats would be given a one-time, expedited approval power to raise the U.S. debt ceiling more quickly, an increase that could be enough to pay for borrowings through 2022.
