German New Chancellor Scholz visited the EU headquarters in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, on the 10th local time, and held meetings with the leaders of the two major EU institutions. Scholz stressed that he would like to see a stronger and more independent EUROPEAN Union.
Brussels is Scholz's second leg on a trip after becoming Germany's new chancellor. In the afternoon, Scholz met with European Council President Michel and European Commission President von der Leyen. The three leaders focused on the EU's economic recovery, the EU's external relations, and the situation in Ukraine.
At a press conference with von der Leyen, Scholz said the three parties in Germany's new government were all pro-European integration and that he wanted to see a stronger and more autonomous EU. Scholz said the EU needs close coordination on foreign policy to ensure Europe's security and defense success.
He also said he was concerned about the situation in Ukraine's border areas, noting that it was the responsibility of EU leaders to ensure that everyone felt secure within their own country. Michel and von der Leyen expressed their appreciation for Scholz's staunch support for the EU and European integration, and both expressed their expectation to work closely with the German leadership to advance the EU development agenda.
