The advent of a magazine with a historical mission

author:History of Chongqing Party

Time is like a white colt passing through the gap, suddenly, "Red Rock Spring and Autumn" has been published for 200 issues, approaching the age of 30.

As an old man who once participated in the magazine company, he is now shy about stacking the highest magazines, filtering the tens of millions of words of the magazine pictures in his heart over and over again, and always feels that there are countless eyes staring at the back of his head, and the eyes are warm and eager. Yin Yin was affectionate, from the old comrades of the former Southern Bureau and the old comrades of the former underground party in eastern Sichuan, as well as the senior leaders at the municipal level as the main body. Although most of them have passed away one after another, their care and support for this publication, and their teaching and encouragement to the future generations of publishers, all seem to be like yesterday, vividly remembered, and the residual warmth still exists.

This is the bloodline of "Red Rock Spring and Autumn", and it is also the root that supports "Red Rock Spring and Autumn" through ups and downs, step by step to this day and shoot green branches.

The advent of a magazine with a historical mission

The inaugural issue of "Red Rock Spring and Autumn"

Comrade Hu Qiaomu set the tone for the historical merits of the Southern Bureau

When "Red Rock Spring and Autumn" came out, the CPC's party history circles were in a period of great change and prosperity.

The influence of the "Left" for a period of time, especially the wanton destruction of the Cultural Revolution, seriously distorted the history of the Party. For example, the well-known JinggangShan Mao and Zhu Huishi once only had pictures and explanations of Mao and Lin shaking hands; the great achievements of the Southern Bureau of the CPC Central Committee were also drowned in the fog of history because of the hatred and suppression of Premier Zhou Enlai by the "Gang of Four"; the arduous underground revolutionary struggle in eastern Sichuan was even more described as "a lot of traitors" and was denounced. In the midst of rectifying the chaos after smashing the "Gang of Four," Ye Jianying, vice chairman of the CPC Central Committee, shouted loudly at the Central Work Conference: The history of the Party should also be straightened out, the history that was upside down by the "Gang of Four" should be turned upside down again, and history should be restored to its original appearance. His proposal was unanimously endorsed by the whole country. The PARTY Central Committee has set up a Central Party History Committee with very high standards, composed of Hua Guofeng, Ye Jianying, Deng Xiaoping, Li Xiannian, Chen Yun, Nie Rongzhen, Deng Yingchao, and Hu Yaobang. Ye Jianying presided over the daily work. In February 1982, the Central Committee also made a decision to set up a leading group for the party history work of the CPC Central Committee under the Secretariat, with Yang Shangkun as the leader, and several deputy leaders were Hu Qiaomu, Bo Yibo, Deng Liqun, and Hu Sheng.

Corresponding institutions have been set up in various localities. The Chongqing Municipal Party History Work Committee is directly led by the Municipal Party Committee, led by Huang Youfan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Advisory Committee, former director of the Propaganda Department of the Municipal Party Committee, and an old comrade of the underground party who participated in the revolution in 1936. During the "Cultural Revolution," Elder Huang squatted in a "cowshed," was whipped, was framed, and deeply resented the practice of falsifying history at will, but also had a profound reflection. They consulted archives, visited veteran comrades and parties concerned, conscientiously sorted out the historical context, summed up historical lessons and lessons, and done a great deal of work with remarkable results.

In the mid-to-late 1980s, Chongqing established the Party History Research Office of the Municipal Party Committee, and the conditions for party history research gradually matured. The relevant departments of the central authorities have decided that chongqing will focus on the national research on the history of the Southern Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and the historical archives of the Southern Bureau will be transferred to Chongqing for safekeeping. The study of party history in Chongqing has been pushed to a higher platform.

In December 1988, Hu Qiaomu, then a member of the Standing Committee of the Central Consultative Committee and deputy head of the Leading Group for Party History Work of the CPC Central Committee, came to Chongqing. Elder Hu has worked with Comrade Mao Zedong for many years, is familiar with the development process of the party, and understands the background, status, and role of major party history events in the historical process. After listening to the report of the Party History Working Committee of the Municipal CPC Committee, I talked a lot about the historical positioning of the Southern Bureau. He noted:

This part of the Party history of the Southern Bureau is very important. Without the extensive work of the Southern Bureau, there would have been no such situation as during the War of Resistance, which had united so many people in the rear, persisted in the War of Resistance, and preserved a large number of elite forces of our Party; without the extensive work of the Southern Bureau, there would have been no mass movement of such a large scale as it had during the Later Liberation War, forming such a powerful second front. The United Front work of the Southern Bureau is outstanding. Without the extensive united front work carried out by the Southern Bureau in the rear areas, it would have been very difficult to unite the democratic parties and people of all walks of life in the Kuomintang areas around our Communist Party, and the situation in the subsequent establishment of New China would have been different, and there would have been no such pattern. Therefore, the united front work of the Southern Bureau laid an important political foundation for the establishment of New China in one aspect.

Elder Hu's remarks set the tone for the historical merits of the Southern Bureau.

In 1990, Song Ping, a former veteran comrade of the Southern Bureau who was then a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, received a Chongqing party history researcher at his home and vividly expounded the important historical status and role of the Southern Bureau with "two battlefields." He noted:

At that time, there were two battlefields in the Chinese revolutionary struggle, namely, a liberated area, and the armed struggle on the front line was the main battlefield; the other battlefield was in the rear area, and in the Kuomintang area, it was also an important battlefield. In the latter battlefield, our Party carried out multifaceted work: building Party organizations at all levels, successfully carrying out united front work, uniting people from all walks of life, and leading the broad masses of the people to support the War of Resistance Against Japan. It can be said that without this front, without the great deal of work and achievements made in the battlefield of the great rear, it would be very difficult to achieve military victory in the front.

The speeches made by the two party and state leaders from a lofty height are tantamount to opening a window for Chongqing party history researchers at a higher level and with a broad field of vision, and guiding them to connect their eyes and thinking with history in a broad context. Both the leaders of the municipal party committee and the staff of the party research office feel a lot of pressure. In view of the fact that due to the destruction of the "Cultural Revolution", the historical clues are confusing, and in addition, some events have passed for several decades, and many of the parties concerned have gradually aged, the work of historical research and historical material collection has been carried out under a high load of intense under the pressure of a sense of "rescue".

The researchers traveled frequently and rushed to all parts of the country to dig deep into the historical facts of the Southern Bureau, summarize the achievements of the Southern Bureau and the ideological realm and personality charm of the Southern Bureau collective represented by Zhou Enlai, and refine the "Red Rock Spirit". They carried expectations, worked hard, and some major historical events were swept away and appeared one after another. For example, during the Anhui Incident, how Comrade Zhou Enlai did not deal with danger and calmly; during the rectification period in Yan'an, the rectification situation of the Southern Bureau, which was full of criticism and self-criticism led by Zhou Enlai, and so on. Among them, many lesser-known touching details were excavated during this period and are extremely precious.

In 1984, Tong Xiaopeng (first from left), Zifei (second from left) and Shen Anna (second from right) and Hua Mingzhi (first from right) were at Gate 50 of Zengjiayan in Chongqing

Comrade Tong Xiaopeng assigned three things

Although the work has been vigorously promoted and the achievements are remarkable, the old comrades and researchers still feel insufficient. In particular, the old comrades believe that there is still room for excavation, and it is very large. With a high sense of political responsibility, the old comrades, despite their advanced age, some of them are still suffering from various diseases, and they come to the rescue from time to time. Visitors and respondents work together to promote the work of historical research.

It was precisely with the help of the former veteran comrades of the Southern Bureau that Chongqing Party history researchers were able to enter the Special Accounting Office of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee and consult the current accounts of the funds provided by the Southern Bureau to the Central Committee in those years, including Comrade Zhou Enlai's autographed report on his strict self-discipline and taking the initiative to request the cancellation or reduction of his special living care. Even when a Chongqing party history researcher went to the Central Organization Department to review the historical archives, Chen Yeping, an old comrade of the former Southern Bureau and then director of the Central Organization Department, personally took him upstairs and downstairs to find people in one office after another. Some researchers later talked about these details with great emotion, saying that the old comrades themselves were vividly interpreting the "Red Rock Spirit". For some time, some old comrades of the former Southern Bureau and the former underground party comrades of eastern Sichuan frequently went to Chongqing, took the initiative to provide materials and clues, and also put forward many suggestions on "using party history to educate people."

In April 1982, at the invitation of the Chongqing Municipal CPC Committee, Rong Gaotang, Tong Xiaopeng, Kong Yuan, Xu Dixin, and a number of other veteran comrades of the former Southern Bureau returned to Chongqing and extensively exchanged views with the principal leaders of the Municipal Party Committee on the importance and necessity of strengthening the collection of party history materials of the Southern Bureau, as well as how to summarize and publicize the history of the Southern Bureau.

In 1985, Comrade Deng Yingchao, then chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, returned to Chongqing for the last time and wrote an inscription in Hongyan Village: "The spirit of Hongyan will always shine." When she left, she said affectionately to the accompanying city leaders and party history workers: "The matter of Hongyan will be entrusted to everyone." ”

The advent of a magazine with a historical mission

In 1985, Deng Yingchao, then chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, wrote an inscription when he returned to Hongyan Village

On June 6, 1988, Tong Xiaopeng, former director of premier Zhou's office and then deputy director of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, came to Chongqing again to bring a plan jointly agreed upon by the veteran comrades. Its main contents are three: it is recommended that a special "Southern Bureau Party History Materials Research Office" be set up under the leadership of the Party History Work Committee of the Municipal Party Committee to strengthen the historical research work of the Southern Bureau; it is proposed to set up a journal to focus on the historical merits of the Southern Bureau and publicize the "Red Rock Spirit"; and it is recommended to compile a set of "Draft History of the Southern Bureau". Tong Xiaopeng said that he hoped that Chongqing would take up the burden and "continue to carry out the in-depth study and accurate publicity of the history of the Southern Bureau entrusted by Sister Deng." The main leaders of the municipal party committee gave an affirmative reply on the spot.

The three things mentioned by Elder Tong were later implemented one by one. With regard to running a publication, the municipal party committee adopted the opinions of the party research office of the municipal party committee and named it "Hongyan Spring and Autumn", which was distributed to the whole country, focusing on the history of the Communist Party of China in the southern national unified area during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and also the history of the local party in Chongqing since the founding of the party, and strived to serve the promotion of the party's basic line, carry forward the party's fine traditions, and strengthen the building of the two civilizations. The principal leaders of the municipal party committee said that this is a glorious political task entrusted by the old comrades and leaders, and we must do a good job and not fail to live up to the great trust of the old comrades and leaders.

At that time, the whole country had just been reorganized by newspapers and periodicals, and public publication numbers became scarce items. Comrade Tong Xiaopeng took the initiative to propose that the issue number be run by him, so as not to embarrass the Chongqing Municipal CPC Committee. He took the application documents of the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee to Zeng Delin, a veteran comrade of the former underground party in eastern Sichuan and then deputy director of the Central Propaganda Department, and the two hit it off.

Therefore, in the capital Beijing, an old comrade of the former Southern Bureau and an old comrade of the former underground party in eastern Sichuan rushed for the birth of "Red Rock Spring and Autumn" for the sake of the original source of party history, the propagation of the personality style of the revolutionaries of the older generation, and the inheritance and development of the party's fine traditional work style.

The inaugural issue of "Red Rock Spring and Autumn" has become a "sought-after commodity"

At that time, Chongqing was administratively under the administration of Sichuan Province, and the magazine number that Tong Xiaopeng and Zeng Delin fought for was the "only one" in the whole of Sichuan that year. In order to prevent the issue number from being diverted for other purposes, after the coordination of Zeng Delin, the declaration did not go through Sichuan Province, and the approval of the Central Propaganda Department was also issued "wearing a hat".

During the period of striving for the publication number, Comrade Tong Xiaopeng went to the West Flower Hall to report the matter to Sister Deng. Sister Deng was very happy and Lian said, "Good! Good! Good! At the request of Comrade Xiaopeng on the spot, he wrote the title of this soon-to-be-born journal. At that time, Sister Deng was old and not in good health, and had announced that she had sealed her pen. Therefore, it was later rumored that the words "Hongyan Spring and Autumn" were the last inscriptions of Sister Deng's existence.

After receiving the approval of the issue number, Chongqing immediately took action, set up a team to transfer people, and prepared for the publication. The main leaders of the municipal party committee have always paid attention to this matter, and originally wanted to be a "fully funded public institution", but the secretary said that it was in the context of reform and opening up, and the journal should be run in the spirit of reform, so it was changed to "self-supporting public institution". However, the secretary specifically instructed the General Office of the Municipal Party Committee to arrange a room for the magazine in the compound of the Municipal Party Committee.

The leading body set up in those years was very strong. The old minister Huang Youfan personally served as the editor-in-chief, and the two deputy editors-in-chief, Hu Kangmin and Li Changpei, were both deputy directors of the party research office of the municipal party committee. Hu Kangmin was later a well-known expert in Chongqing's party history circles who enjoyed state council subsidies, and it was he who discovered, sorted out, and introduced to the public; Li Changpei worked at Xinhua News Agency in his early years, served as deputy director of the municipal museum, and was later transferred to the party research office of the municipal party committee. The two cadres in charge of the administrative work of the magazine were Zhong Xiuwen, who worked in the party research office of the municipal party committee for more than ten years and had a well-known personality; the other was Hu Beiqi, who later served as deputy secretary general of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; his uncle Hu Ziang, one of the founders of the China Democratic Construction Association, a well-known political activist, was then the vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and had a deep and extensive network among the democratic parties in the country. Needless to say, the strength of such a team and the strength to run the journal was second to none in the media circles in Chongqing at that time.

In May 1989, "Red Rock Spring and Autumn" was officially published and distributed. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Southern Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee held a series of celebration activities, and the publication and distribution of "Red Rock Spring and Autumn" was included in the list of activities.

The advent of a magazine with a historical mission

In the Red Rock Auditorium, Rong Gaotang and the Staff of Red Rock performed "Brothers and Sisters Open the Wilderness"

At that time, there were as many as a hundred former comrades of the Southern Bureau who came to Chongqing from all over the country, and they were particularly excited to return to Hongyan. They said that they learned to behave and do things with Comrade Zhou Enlai in those years, which laid the foundation for their lifelong adherence to their convictions and hard work and resentment for the party's work, and this experience can never be forgotten. A considerable number of them have reached high positions at the provincial and ministerial levels, and Comrade Song Ping is already a leader of the party and the state. In those days in Chongqing, they remembered Premier Zhou and recalled that year, laughing and laughing from morning to night, as if they had endless energy. In addition to being happy, Rong Gaotang, a former veteran comrade of the Southern Bureau and then secretary general of the Central Advisory Commission, took the stage and performed the whole book "Brothers and Sisters Opening up the Wasteland" with the young female narrator of the Hongyan Revolution Memorial Hall. He sang and danced, and the slightly clumsy body movements and the vitality exuded by his body vividly expressed his realm and self-confidence of being old and unyielding, and the funny performance also pushed the atmosphere of the scene to a climax.

The media followed up in a timely manner and published a large number of articles introducing the activity tidbits and the touching "red rock complex" of the old comrades. For a time, a wave of reliving and learning the "Red Rock Spirit" was set off in the mountain city, and "Red Rock Village" and "Red Rock Spirit" became the social hot words of those days. Logically, the inaugural issue of the freshly baked "Red Rock Spring and Autumn" became a "sought-after commodity", and when the old comrade of the former Southern Bureau left Chongqing, there were several copies in his luggage bag, or even a stack.

Comrade Tong Xiaopeng later wrote in his autobiographical book "Little Boy Left Home and Old Man Return": "Founding the magazine "Red Rock Spring and Autumn" was the biggest political work I did in my later years. ”
