According to Le Figaro on December 1, Tchaikovsky's ballet "The Nutcracker" sparked a racist controversy over two oriental and Asian dances in the second act.

In the scene "Candy Kingdom", there are four choreographies depicting the classic foods of four countries: Spanish dance for chocolate, Arabic dance for coffee, Chinese dance for tea, and Russian dance for Tekopac, of which Arabic and Chinese dances are questioned. The acting director of the Berlin State Ballet therefore considered The Nutcracker to be racist and outdated and decided not to stage it this winter. The move caused a huge controversy in Germany, with some arguing that it was not Tchaikovsky's problem, but the choreography; others thought that the audience did not feel that there was a problem, and that the ballet was superfluous. In addition to the Berlin State Ballet, the Scottish Ballet and the Royal Ballet will also adapt The Nutcracker to remove the racist component.
