"Chinese Celebrities" Qing. Xu Shou

Xu Shou (February 26, 1818 – September 24, 1884), courtesy name Shengyuan, was a native of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, who systematically introduced the basics of modern chemistry in China around the 1860s. Scientist of the late Qing Dynasty, translator, chemist, enlightener of modern Chinese chemistry, pioneer of China's modern shipbuilding industry. The translated names of sodium, calcium, nickel, zinc, manganese, cobalt, magnesium and other Chinese created have always been used. In order to impart scientific and technological knowledge, Xu Shou and Fu Lanya and others founded Gezhi Academy in Shanghai in 1874. This is the first place in China to teach scientific and technological knowledge. In the same year that Gezhi College was opened, Xu Shou and others founded and issued China's first scientific and technological journal, "Gezhi Compilation".
