The animation of "Nine Colored Deer" is based on the story of the Dunhuang mural "Deer King Bunsheng". In the summer of 1980, Feng Jiannan and the Nine Colored Deer team spent two months from Shanghai and along the Silk Road from east to west to Dunhuang. In front of the rich and gorgeous murals, the team members copied the five sketches. The five main creators spent 23 days in dunhuang's Thousand Buddha Cave, and the task was to complete the design of all the background scenes in the nine-colored deer cartoon. At that time, the conditions were harsh and needed to be hand-drawn, just to present the image of the nine-colored deer in the most realistic and vivid form in front of the movie screen. Although the whole nine-colored deer is only 24 minutes, more than 200 scenes have been designed for this creation.
