China has a total of 34 provincial-level administrative regions, including 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities directly under the central government, and 2 special administrative regions. Leaving aside the four municipalities directly under the central government of Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing and the two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, how many of the other 28 provinces and administrative regions have universities named after provincial capitals/capitals? I divide these provinces/administrations into five categories to introduce a total of 20 universities.
Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province, Wuhan University in Hubei Province, lanzhou University in Gansu Province, these three universities are all affiliated to the Ministry of Education, all of which are the universities with the strongest comprehensive strength in the province, all of which are 985 engineering universities, and have also been selected as the world's first-class university construction university class A, worthy of the top universities in China.
Coincidentally, all three universities are relatively strong in humanities and social sciences and basic sciences, and they are not very good at engineering.
Fuzhou University in Fujian Province, Nanchang University in Jiangxi Province, and Zhengzhou University in Henan Province are all 211 engineering universities, not ministries under the Ministry of Education, but provincial colleges. Nanchang University and Zhengzhou University are the universities with the strongest comprehensive strength in the province, while the comprehensive strength of Fuzhou University is slightly inferior to that of Xiamen University in the province. Fuzhou University and Nanchang University are world-class discipline construction universities, and Zhengzhou University is a world-class university construction university B.
These three universities have received strong support from their provinces in the past two years, and in the "14th Five-Year Plan" of Fujian Province, they have clearly expressed their support for Fuzhou University to strive to become a world-class university and build a university.
In the "14th Five-Year Plan" of Jiangxi Province, it is clearly mentioned that Jiangxi Province's financial overall arrangement of 3 billion yuan to support Nanchang University to create a "world-class university", at least 1 new national "double-first-class" construction discipline, and strive to enter the ranks of "world-class universities" construction universities.
Henan Province will invest 5 billion yuan during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period to support the construction of Zhengzhou University's first-class universities, and strive to make Zhengzhou University's comprehensive ranking of national universities enter the top 30. Zhengzhou University's 2021 budget exceeds 7 billion yuan, which is comparable to Shenzhen University (but the average student budget is only a little more than half of Shenzhen University).
In this file, there is also Taipei University in Taiwan Province. The situation of this university is more special, it does not have the label of "985" and "double first-class", we can only measure the status of this university among the universities in Taiwan Province. It is not a university with relatively strong comprehensive strength in Taiwan Province (such as National Taiwan University, Tsinghua University, Yangming Jiaotong University, and Cheng kung university), but its legal strength is particularly strong, a bit like the East China University of Political Science and Law and the Southwest University of Political Science and Law in the mainland, so it is placed in the top universities in the province.
Guangzhou University in Guangdong, Jinan University in Shandong, Shenyang University in Liaoning, Changchun University in Jilin and Chengdu University in Sichuan are all well-known universities in the province, not the best universities in their cities, but they are all "universities" rather than "colleges", so they are ranked third by me. None of them are 985, 211, nor are they selected as double first-class. The first three universities have doctoral programs, the last two universities do not, and the fastest growing of the five universities is Guangzhou University and Chengdu University.
In Guangdong Province, there are "senior people" such as Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology, Jinan University, South China Normal University, etc., and there are "rising stars" such as Shenzhen University and Southern University of Science and Technology.
If you think about it, Shenzhen University and Southern University of Science and Technology are both universities in Shenzhen, and Guangzhou University is the "pro-son" of Guangzhou. In the 2021 Guangdong Provincial Local College Budget Rankings, Guangzhou University ranks only behind Shenzhen University, ahead of Southern University of Science and Technology and the veteran 211 South China Normal University.
Shandong is a province with a large population and a large province for the college entrance examination, but its higher education as a whole is in the embarrassment of "a large number of colleges and universities and a small number of top universities".
Shandong Province has three top universities in Shandong Province, Shandong University, Ocean University of China and China University of Petroleum (East China), but the latter two are running schools in Qingdao, Shandong University in Jinan, Qingdao, Weihai three places, Jinan City to focus on the development of Jinan University, Qilu University of Technology, Shandong First Medical University, it is not surprising.
There are more double-first-class universities in Sichuan Province, Sichuan University, University of Electronic Science and Technology, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, Southwest Jiaotong University, Sichuan Agricultural University, Chengdu University of Technology, Southwest Petroleum University, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine are very good, in many universities, Chengdu University seems to be unremarkable.
But don't forget, Chengdu University is the "pro-son" of Chengdu, and no city or prefecture in Sichuan except Chengdu can reach one-fifth of Chengdu's GDP. Looking at the budget ranking of non-ministerial colleges and universities in Sichuan Province in 2021, Chengdu University can be said to be "riding on the dust", "richer" than the four double first-class universities.
Shijiazhuang College in Hebei Province, Taiyuan College in Shanxi Province, Changsha College in Hunan Province, Kunming College in Yunnan Province, Hefei College in Anhui Province, Guiyang College in Guizhou Province, Harbin College in Heilongjiang Province, and Nanning College in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are all "colleges" named after provincial capitals/capitals, not "universities".
Among these eight universities, the closest to the "renamed university" is Hefei College, which has now fully met the "upgraded" software and hardware standards, passed the provincial review, and waited for the final approval. Other colleges and universities are also on the road to changing their name to "University". From 2020 to 2021, they scrambled to "vow to change the name of the university".
In June 2020, Harbin University publicly stated that it would study and formulate the 14th Five-Year Plan, with the overall goal of building Harbin University. In October 2020, Guiyang College publicly stated that it would strive to achieve the goal of renaming it "University" during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. In October 2020, Shijiazhuang College publicly stated that it would change its name to "University" as the focus of its 2021 work plan.
In April 2021, Kunming's "14th Five-Year Plan" mentioned that the pace of Kunming College's renaming as a university was accelerated. In May 2021, Changsha University publicly stated that it would strive to meet the standards of renaming "university" in software and hardware in 2025. In May 2021, Guangxi's "14th Five-Year Plan" outline mentioned that Nanning University was promoted to establish Nanning University. In September 2021, Taiyuan College publicly stated that it would become a master's degree awarding unit to establish a construction university in 2025.
Zhejiang Province, Shaanxi Province, Qinghai Province, Hainan Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Tibet Autonomous Region, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, these eight provincial-level administrative regions, there are currently no undergraduate universities named after the provincial capital/capital (the name of the provincial capital/ capital + professional direction + "university or college" does not count).
Zhejiang Province once had Hangzhou University, but this well-known university with the strength to enter the 211 Project eventually "returned" to Zhejiang University. But the people of Hangzhou always seem to want to make this "golden signboard" reappear in the world.
The situation in Shaanxi and Qinghai is more similar, the capital of Shaanxi Province, Xi'an, once wanted to support the renaming of Xi'an College of Arts and Sciences to "Xi'an University", in fact, the English name of Xi'an College of Arts and Sciences is Xi'an University; Xining University in Qinghai Province is already under construction, based on the transfer of the former Kunlun College of Qinghai University. At present, there is no public information to prove that the other five provinces and autonomous regions have plans to build universities named after provincial capitals/capitals.
The establishment of institutions of higher learning named after provincial capitals is beneficial to both the capital city and the university itself.
