The metaverse concept has been on fire lately, and Apple may be making some moves in this regard as well. On November 26, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst familiar with Apple's supply chain, released a latest investment report, which predicts that Apple will launch a headset in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Guo Mingxi said in the report that the head-mounted AR device that Apple will launch has the following major differences compared to competitors:
Chip performance and computing power at the level of a Mac
Works independently without relying on iPhone or Mac
Supports a wide range of applications rather than specific applications
The report lays out the rough specifications of Apple's AR devices, saying it will be powered by a low-end processor that handles sensor-related tasks, a high-end processor that will perform similarly to the M1 chip currently used in Macs, and will also feature two 4K Micro OLED displays from Sony (and therefore may also support VR) and at least 6 to 8 optical modules.
The report said that Apple's goal is that AR can replace the iPhone in 10 years, and based on the current 1 billion active users of the iPhone, the sales target may be to sell at least 1 billion AR devices within 10 years.
News about Apple will launch AR-related products has been circulating in recent years, and last year there were reports that Apple will release an AR glasses that need to be used with the iPhone in 2021, but 2021 has almost passed. Considering the accuracy of Guo Mingxi's past revelations for Apple, this news now indicates that the legendary Apple AR should not be far from landing.
