March 17, 1958, was the "birthday" of China's first black-and-white television set, the "Beijing Brand" TV. Although named after Beijing, this TV is completely made in Tianjin.

In 1925, the British Baird successfully developed the world's first television. In 1954, color television was introduced in the United States, and the radio and television industry developed rapidly. By the mid-1950s, television broadcasting was quite popular abroad.

However, after the founding of New China, there has been no television broadcast in China. In 1957, New China decided to develop its own television broadcasting business, and the task of developing television receivers fell on the shoulders of the state-owned Tianjin Radio Factory (Qiyi2 Factory).

In order to complete the task, the technicians of the 712 Factory, who had not seen television and had not learned theoretical knowledge, had to dismantle a SOVIET-produced television prototype without any expert guidance, studied thousands of parts of this prototype, and copied these components one by one, and finally successfully assembled China's first television prototype in March 1958.

On the evening of March 17, 1958, the China Television Center broadcast its first television program in Beijing, and the experimental hall was lined with Soviet and Chinese television prototypes. At 7 p.m., the image of the broadcaster clearly appeared on the first television screen in China, accompanied by a loud voice, and the prototype trial test passed 100%. China's first black-and-white television set was successfully developed, and Premier Zhou named it the "Beijing Card".

Encouraged by the great honor of developing and producing "Huaxia's first screen", Qiyi2 Factory continued its efforts and successively developed and produced China's first generation of color television sets in 1971 and China's first color TV production line in 1979.

Today, although Beijing brand TV is no longer produced and has become the memory of a generation, China's TV industry is still booming. In 2020, China's color TV output has exceeded 190 million units, accounting for more than 70% of the world's output, laser TV, 4K TV and other advanced technologies continue to develop.
