Data obtained by Le Monde from German states shows that in 2020, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, had the highest number of knife attacks, with 5411; Berlin, with a high proportion of immigrants, ranked second with 2593; Lower Saxony ranked third with 2377. At least 100 men and women were killed in attacks across the country last year.
In the past few months, there have been a number of knife attacks on the streets of Germany, causing panic among the population. The data also shows that 60.4% of the suspects have German citizenship and 39.6% are non-German citizens. Immigrants accounted for about 17.4 percent of the suspects.
Despite the ongoing number of knife attacks, the German federal government has not released national data on knife attacks. Allegedly, this is because the German Federal Interior Ministry is worried that the publication of the data will cause panic among the public.
