Murong Sheng (慕容盛, Later Yan Zhaowu) (373 – 401 CE), was the eldest son of Murong Bao, the Emperor hui of Hui, and his mother, Ding. He was the third emperor of Later Yan.
In 369 (the fifth year of Jianyuan), Murong Chui, the Former Yan Wu king, repelled the Northern Expeditionary Army of Huan Wen of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, but he was ostracized by Murong Jue, and Murong Chui was forced to be helpless, and went west to Former Qin with his wife Duan Shi and son Murong Bao.
When Murong Ke learned of Murong Ke's death two years earlier, he already had plans to annex Former Yan, and had specially sent emissaries to Former Yan to explore the truth, but Murong Jian did not dare to send troops because of Murong Chui's prestige. Now that Murong Chui had come, Jian Jian was very happy and personally went out to the countryside to greet him, and crowned him as the champion general.
At the end of the year, Former Yan broke his promise to invite troops that day, and did not cede Hu Prison (虎牢, in present-day Xingyang, Henan) to send troops to Former Yan and capture Luoyang under the pretext of giving the western land to Former Qin.
In June 370, Jian Jian ordered Wang Meng to send troops to Former Yan again, and he personally sent them off. Wang Meng defeated Former Yan's empress dowager Murong Jue, who led an army of more than 300,000 troops, at Luchuan, and took advantage of the victory to take the Former Yan capital Yecheng. After taking Yecheng, the Former Yan emperor Murong Wei, who was on his way to Liaodong, was captured by Former Qin's pursuers, and Former Qin officially annexed Former Yan.
In the fifth year of Taihe (370), after Former Yan was destroyed by Former Qin, many of the Xianbei Murong clan were moved to Guanzhong.
In 384, Murong Wei conspired with Murong Su to rebel with thousands of Xianbei people in Chang'an in response to the Western Yan army attacking Chang'an, and he also planned to kill Jian Jian in his home on the pretext of his son's new marriage. However, Jian Jian did not go due to heavy rain, and the matter was revealed, and Jian Jian summoned Murong Wei and Murong Su and killed them, and even more so the Xianbei people in the city were almost killed by Jian Jian.
When Former Qin killed Murong Shi, Murong Sheng fled to his cousin Murong Chong.
In the ninth year of Taiyuan (384), Murong Sheng's grandfather Murong Chui established Later Yan. Murong Chong, who was then the Taishou of Pingyang, raised an army in Hedong, with 20,000 troops, and marched to attack Pusaka, and Jian Jian ordered Dou Chong to recruit him. Dou Chong attacked Murong Chong at Hedong and defeated Murong Chong, who led 8,000 cavalry to his brother Murong Hong's army.
Soon Murong Hong marched into Chang'an and established the Western Yan regime.
In June of the ninth year of Taiyuan (384), Murong Hong's advisers Gao Gai and Su Qinchong, believing that Murong Hong's moral standing was inferior to Murong Chong's, and that the law enforcement was harsh, so they killed Murong Hong and made Murong Chong the emperor's brother-in-law, acting according to the emperor's will, and appointing officials on their own.
In the first year of the reign (385), Murong Chong was proclaimed emperor, but he was rewarded and punished unevenly, and his decrees were unclear. Murong Sheng, who was twelve years old at the time, said to his uncle Murong Rou: "Now the King of Zhongshan is not brilliant in wisdom and talent, and he has not yet performed favors on others, so he is proud and arrogant, and according to me Murong Sheng, there are very few failures that do not perish." ”
Soon, Murong Chong was killed by Duan Muyan, and Murong Sheng said to Murong Rou: "Our current situation is like being between the blades of swords and guns, when we are suspected, showing stupidity will be suspected, showing strategy is more dangerous than the bird's nest on the curtain, we should be like a bird's nest on the curtain, we should be like a bird flying high, a flight is ten thousand miles, can not sit here and wait for the hunt." ”
Murong Sheng and Murong Rou, as well as his younger brother Murong Rou, would continue eastwards and return to their grandfather Murong Chui, the Emperor of Yan.

When Murong Sheng arrived at Hou Yan, Murong Chui inquired about the situation to the west, and Murong Sheng drew a map on the ground. Murong Chui smiled and said, "Once upon a time, Emperor Wu of Wei touched Emperor Wei's head and made him a marquis, and his grandfather loved his grandson, which was the case very early on. Therefore, he was given the title of Duke of Changle, and later successively served as a general of the Scattered Horse and a general of the left.
After Murong Chui's death, his fourth son Murong Bao succeeded to the throne.
In 398, Murong Bao raised an army to attack Northern Wei in the south, Murong Sheng stayed in Longcheng, and the Later Yan general Duan Sukui rebelled, and Murong Sheng rushed out of Longcheng to defend Murong Bao, and Murong Bao was almost captured by Duan Subone several times, all thanks to Murong Sheng's rescue. Murong Sheng repeatedly proposed strange plots to Murong Bao, but Murong Bao was unable to comply, and the Yan army was repeatedly defeated in the future.
In April 398, Murong Bao did not listen to Murong Sheng's words, and entered Longcheng without any precautions at the end of his journey, and murdered Lan Khan, the defender of Longcheng.
After Murong Bao was killed by Lan Khan, Murong Sheng rushed to mourn, and the general Zhang Zhen strongly discouraged him, believing that he could not go. Murong Sheng said, "I am now laying down my life to tell him about my sadness and distress. Lan Khan was stupid and shallow by nature, and he would definitely take care of the affection of his family and could not bear to kill me. A few months is enough to stretch my ambitions. ”
Murong Sheng entered Longcheng to mourn. Lan Khan's wife Yi Shi received Murong Sheng with tears in her eyes, and Lan Khan sent his son Lan Mu to greet Murong Sheng, place him in the palace, and appoint him as a servant and Zuo Guanglu.
Lan Khan's brother Lan Ti and younger brother Lan Nan persuaded Lan Khan to kill Murong Sheng, but Lan Khan did not agree. Lan Ti was arrogant and absurd, and it was rude to serve Lan Khan, so Murong Sheng told Lan Khan that he had always been arrogant and could not hand over a large army to him. At this time, Murong Sheng, while provoking the relationship between Lan Khan's brothers, sent his henchmen to secretly recruit thousands of soldiers to occupy Jian'an City and oppose Lan Khan. Lan Khan suspected that this was at Murong Sheng's behest and summoned him to see him preparing to be killed, but Murong Sheng pretended to be ill and did not answer the call, and at the same time sent his wife to his mother-in-law to intercede, and Lan Khan was unable to do so. Subsequently, Murong Sheng gathered his henchmen and entered the palace at night, hunting down and killing Lan Khan's father and son.
Murong Sheng immediately proclaimed himself emperor and changed his era name to "Jianping".
Murong Sheng, although brave and scheming, was mean and unkind, and after taking the throne, he not only treated his subordinates harshly, but also forgot her original life-saving grace for marrying his wife as Lan Shi. It was only because his wife was the daughter of Lan Khan that he ordered her to be killed, and after strong advice from the clan, she was spared from death, but she was not made empress.
Soon, Murong Qi, the hero who had recruited soldiers against Lan Khan, was also killed by him, and from then on, the people of Later Yan were cold and rebellious.
Once, when a banquet was held in the Xinchang Hall to entertain the courtiers, Murong Sheng said, "You Aiqing talk about your own words, and I will accept them." It was precisely because Murong Sheng used harsh methods to control his subordinates, arrogant and had no affection, and was very suspicious of his subordinates, that Ding Xin said these words.
In August 401, the left general Murong Guo, the dianzhong generals Qin You, Duan Zan, and others plotted to instigate the forbidden army to attack and kill Murong Sheng, and the matter was revealed, and all three were arrested and killed, and as many as 500 people were affected.
A few days later, Qin Xing and Duan Zanzi Duan Tai led their disciples to infiltrate the palace at night, and shouted to kill the inner court, Murong Sheng was awakened, and led the left and right guards out of the palace to meet the battle and repel the rebels. Suddenly, a rebel soldier went around his back from the shadows and raised his hand with a knife, Murong Sheng hurriedly dodged, his foot had been slashed, and the rebel soldier did not know where to go. Because of his serious injuries, he urgently summoned his uncle Murong Xi (慕容熙), the Duke of Hejian ( 河間公 ) , to entrust him with the aftermath , but before Murong Xi could come, he had already fainted and died soon after, at the age of 29.
