PARIS, Nov. 19 (Wang Qinming) -- Montbéliard, an eastern French city, has recently installed more than a dozen new infrared speed-measuring radars and plans to install more of this type by the end of the year. These new radars are very unhappy for some motorists because they can quietly take pictures of violators.

Motorists have different opinions about the new speed radar. Some motorists welcomed them, while others rejected them terribly, believing that it was just a "new trick" for the state to take money out of their pockets.

In the Montbéliard region, 16 new speed-measuring radars have been installed. Equipped with infrared flashes, these radars can detect a variety of violations, such as not stopping at a red light, driving without wearing seat belts, using a mobile phone while driving, and even detect violations such as disrespecting the right of way and safe distance. And unlike traditional speed radars, they are discreet in appearance and do not require flashing when taking pictures.

In the small town of St. Susan near Montbéliard, thousands of motorists pass by the main road every day, where a new infrared radar is installed. The new radar installed this time is spread throughout the city.

As part of the traffic control equipment modernization plan, the installation of a new radar, also known as urban field equipment (UTE), is on the agenda in 2020. At the end of July 2021, the first new speed radar was tested near Montbéliard.

The speed radar installed, also known as the "mini radar", is more stealthy than traditional radar and can be installed covertly on some other urban infrastructure, such as street lights. They can also be easily moved position. Not all radars will be "powered on" at the same time, in other words, these radars can play a "deterrent" role for motorists even if they are not turned on.

These new velocimeters will be installed in traffic-prone sections, such as near schools or other public facilities, to prevent traffic accidents.

At present, the new speed radar in France is still in the experimental stage, and the test period will continue until the beginning of 2022. If the new radar proves to be able to reduce traffic accidents, France will completely replace the old radar with a new speed radar.
