Cocoto Sea is a mining town that was gradually developed in the 1930s relying on the rare metal mines of the Cocoto Sea, of which The Third Mine is the most abundant in mineral resources. But on the other hand, after more than half a century of extensive open-pit mining, it has also changed from a mountain that was more than 200 meters above the surface to a mine pit up to 250 meters deep.
In 2013, the Cocoto Sea Mining Area in Fuyun County was included in the first batch of pilot areas for the transformation and relocation of independent industrial and mining areas in China. In the same year, the local ecological restoration was also officially launched.
In a few years, ecological governance projects such as flood control and environmental transformation in industrial and mining areas, geological environment and mudslide control around No. 3 mine, and vegetation restoration have been completed. Up to now, a total of more than 100,000 trees of various types have been planted, and more than 1.5 million square meters of green area has been added, and the bare mountains have been re-cloaked in green.
On the other hand, the No. 3 mine pit and geological exhibition hall have been properly protected; the Ayiguozi Mine, which has been abandoned for many years, has also been reopened as a scenic spot after restoration; the abandoned old factory building has been transformed into the No. 3 Cultural And Tourism Institute... Yang Hongqin, director of the Hongya County Commerce and Health Care Industry Development Bureau, told reporters that in the past, there were also deforestation in Areas such as Wawu Mountain and Yuping Mountain in Hongya County. However, since 1998, Sichuan Province has banned natural forest logging in forest areas such as Wawu Mountain and Yuping Mountain. At the same time, a number of mines with high environmental pollution were shut down. Yang Hongqin introduced that in recent years, Hongya County has shut down the hydropower stations and mines in the Wawu Mountain Nature Reserve, and the forest vegetation in the Yuping Mountain area has gradually been restored.
In 2014, in order to better realize the value of ecological products, Hongya County began to develop forest health tourism. "We have built a number of forest rehabilitation bases according to local conditions, which not only protects the environment, but also realizes the transformation of forest areas into scenic spots and resources into assets." Yang Hongqin said.
