Diaoyu City is located in Diaoyu Mountain, 5 kilometers south bank of the Jialing River in Hechuan District, Chongqing, covering an area of 2.5 square kilometers. Diaoyu Mountain is steep, after the construction of the city, the Jialing River, Fu River, Qu River surrounded on three sides, Xiongguan according to this, easy to defend and difficult to attack, is a well-known ancient ruins of Bashu at home and abroad.
What really makes Diaoyu City famous is the famous "Diaoyu City Defense War" in history.
The "Battle of Diaoyu City", which took place in Diaoyu City in Luhezhou, Tongchuanfu Province, the Southern Song Dynasty for 36 years, began in 1259 AD, was a life-and-death decisive battle between the Southern Song Dynasty and Mongolia, and was also a battle of great significance in Chinese history and world history, becoming a rare unique example of a weak victory over a strong war in the history of Chinese and foreign wars.
In 1235 AD, the Mongol army, while conquering Eastern Europe in the west and Jinliao in the east, sent a large number of troops to the south to attack the Song.
In 1243 AD, Yu Jiu, the envoy of Sichuan and the governor of Chongqing, built a city on diaoyu Mountain on Tongchuanfu Road, moved to Hezhou and Shizhao County, and built a river defense fortress as an important pillar of the Northern Imperial Mongol Army, and the name of Diaoyu City began here.
After three times of construction, Diaoyu City built a fortress along the mountain, along the mountain dangerously built two stone walls with a height of 2 or 3 meters, the circumference of the city is 13 miles (plus a total of 16 miles of the city), there are 8 watchtower-style gates, and the area of the city is 2.5 square kilometers. The Small East Gate of Shannan and the Qimen Gate of Shanbei are each built from the mountain to build a city wall that extends into the heart of the Jialing River, named "Yizi City". There is a naval dock on the riverside, where warships are moored. Divided into two cities, inside and outside. To the east of the city, the city wall is built on the rock wall, and the west is surrounded by water on three sides, which is the outer barrier. The inner city has built forts, piers, soldier workshops, martial arts yamen, military barracks, and competition fields, and has also excavated 14 Tianchi, dug 92 wells, thousands of acres of good land for farming, and built a secret passage to the outside of the city.
Diaoyu City is on a dangerous terrain, and the military and civilians of the Southern Song Dynasty rely on this natural danger fortress to hold on to their defenses.
In 1259 AD, the Mongol Möngke Khan led 40,000 troops to besiege Diaoyu City, the Song army defenders Wang Jian and Zhang Jue led 10,000 troops, held the fortress for half a year, repeatedly frustrated the fierce attacks of the Mongol army, Möngke Khan died in the army (death caused by illness, wounded and died), the Mongol army was forced to retreat north. In the following 20 years, the military and civilians of Diaoyu City resisted the attack of the Mongol army, and after more than 200 large and small battles, the Mongol army was finally unable to resist.
In 1260, after Kublai Khan took the throne, he changed the strategy of taking Bashu first and gradually shifted the focus of the attack to the Jingxiang region in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The Mongols and Song dynasties entered a phase of confrontation in the Sichuan battlefield. As an outpost of Chongqing, Diaoyu City is closely related to many mountain cities along the Jialing River and the Yangtze River, which is enough to control the Dongchuan River, so it is still the focus of contention between the Mongolian and Song Dynasties.
In order to contain the Southern Song Dynasty from bashu to aid the Jingxiang region, the Mongol army strengthened the siege of Diaoyu City and "built a city to peek into" between Diaoyu City and other mountain cities. However, the Diaoyu City defender Zhang Jue was strong, and the Mongol army could only "look at the city and sigh."
After all, the wheel of history cannot be stopped. In early 1276, the Court of the Southern Song Dynasty lowered the Yuan at Lin'an. The Yuan army also accelerated the pace of pacifying Sichuan, and in more than a year, it successively trapped Luzhou and Pingdongchuan. In February of the lunar calendar in 1278, the city of Chongqing was attacked.
The building will fall, and it will be difficult to support it alone. In the first month of 1279, the defender of Diaoyu City and hezhou appeased Wang Li, ending the resistance on the condition that the city could not be slaughtered, and Kaesong lowered the yuan. The Diaoyu City, which had been defending the Southern Song Dynasty for 36 years, finally fell. In March of the same year, the young emperor Zhao Fu, who fled to Yashan, died on the back of Lu Xiufu, and the Southern Song Dynasty fell.
The "Diaoyu City Defense War" lasted for 36 years, writing a rare glorious stroke of "defeating the strong with the weak" in the history of Chinese and foreign wars, and the Diaoyu City was therefore praised by Europeans as "God's Whip".
