A desperate New Zealand woman in Dunedin, in the south of the country, called the police, saying she had been held hostage by a particularly aggressive possum.
The New Zealand Herald quoted authorities as saying that whenever she tried to leave the house for help, only the marsupials harassed her. When the police arrived, the critter came out of its hiding place and climbed onto the lap of a policeman.
Neither the possum nor the woman nor the police were injured
Emergency services believe it was either a runaway pet or a wild possum separated from its mother. The aggressive marsupial has been taken to a remote area and released to prevent further harassment. Possums, women and police officers were not injured during the operation.
New Zealand possums generally inhabit forests or grasses, about the size of a cat, nocturnal omnivores, many years ago possums were brought to New Zealand by colonists from Australia, they are particularly fertile, soon a small number of possums into large groups of possums, a large number of plants were bitten, poss a threat to the survival of other animals, just like rabbits in Australia flooded, becoming the number one local predator.
