In recent years, the city has implemented a series of wetland improvement projects, and gradually formed a more scientific and standardized wetland protection and restoration model. The improvement of the ecological environment has restored the water ecosystem, the waterbird population has been increasing, and the "migratory birds gathered" to paint the ecological picture of Shizuishan Mountain has become a winter scene in Shizuishan City. Xinghai Lake has also formed a wetland ecological landscape of "city water dependence, human water affinity", which is the natural "oxygen bar" of our city and has become a wintering ground for many migratory birds.
After monitoring, there are 9 orders and 55 species of various wild birds in our city, including 5 species of birds under national key protection, and the birds that inhabit are black stork, egret, spot-billed duck, heron, red-breasted duck, red-breasted duck, red-billed diving duck, anti-billed sandpiper, bone-toped chicken, black-winged long-legged sandpiper, black waterfowl, ordinary tern, magpie duck, floating gull, silver gull, fishing gull, little swan, red-billed gull, etc., with a roost of more than 30,000.

At present, the wetland area of Shizuishan City is 55038.28 hectares, accounting for 26.56% of the total wetland area of Ningxia and 10.36% of the total land area of the city. Seven wetland-type nature reserves have been established, including 1 autonomous region-level wetland reserve and 6 wetland parks.
