I. Brief introduction of Gaiyan's history:
Gai Yan was born unknown, died in 39 AD, the character Juqing, Yuyang County Yaoyang County (now Beijing Pinggu District) people; it is said that Gai Yan was eight feet tall, able to draw a bow of three hundred pounds, at that time located in the frontier of Yuyang County, where customs advocated courage, and Gai Yan was known for courage. Peng Pet was the Taishou of Yuyang County, summoned Gai Yan to be a lieutenant in the camp, acting as an escort of the army, and engaged in the county and the prefecture, and could do his duty. In 23 AD, when Liu Xiu ran to Hebei to redevelop, Geng Quan of Shanggu Commandery and Peng Peng of Yuyang Commandery discussed surrendering to Liu Xiu, and in 24 AD, Gai Yan was ordered and other generals to lead a surprise horse to join Forces with Liu Xiu, and became a member of Liu Xiu's tiger generals.

II. Many Achievements in combat battlefields:
After Gai Yan and the others defected to Liu Xiu, he was appointed a general, and together with other generals, he swept through Hebei with Liu Xiu, laid a foothold, occupied the whole territory of Hebei to spy on the world, and in 25 AD, after Liu Xiu became emperor, Gai Yan was promoted to the general of Huya because of his military merits. In 26 AD, Liu Yong at Suiyang also broke away from the initial regime Liu Xuan, and after Liu Xiu became emperor, he also learned to be called emperor, and the two forces after the Han Dynasty confronted a skirmish dispute; at that time, Liu Yong's forces divided and occupied the Kwantung region to establish the State of Liang, Liu Xiu's strategy after unifying Hebei was to first attack Guandong and then attack Longshu; Liu Xiu's general Geng Chun led an army to attack Jiyin County, defeated Liu Yong's forces, and occupied Dingtao.

In March 26, Liu Xiu appointed the Huya general Gai Yan as the main general, with Four lieutenants, Ma Wu (馬武), Liu Long (劉隆), Du Du (尉馬隆), Du Du (護軍都尉馬成), and Wang Ba (王霸), as his deputy generals, leading tens of thousands of troops to conquer Suiyang.3 Gai Yan's troops took Xiangyi and Maxiang Counties in two ways, east and west, and led the army to drive straight in, tightly besieging Suiyang City, and Liu Yong and the remnants of Liu Yong could not leave the door; at this moment, Su Mao, the general of the original regime who accompanied Gai Yan on the expedition, suddenly raised an army to rebel, occupied Guangle, and took the initiative to declare himself a vassal to Liu Yong. Liu Yong was overjoyed, appointed Su Mao as the Grand Sima and was crowned the King of Huaiyang, and the morale of Liu Yong's troops was greatly boosted; Gai Yan did not expect that Su Mao would rebel against the enemy, the morale of the army was affected, and the siege of the city could not be conquered for several months; by August, Gai Yan sent out his army to harvest the wheat of the fields, climbed the city wall by night, and entered the city. Liu Yong was frightened and rushed to lead his troops to escape from the East Gate, Gai Yan led his army to pursue, all the way to break the enemy, attack Xue County, kill his Lu County Taishou, Pengcheng, Fuyang, Zhuqiu, Xiao County, all surrendered.

Then Gaiyan led his army to attack the city strategically, attacked Liu Yongpei County and killed Taishou, Liu Yongbu rescued Liu Yong with more than 30,000 people, including Su Mao, Qiang Qiang, and Zhou Jian, and attacked Gaiyan together, and Gaiyan fought with them in Peixi, and destroyed his army; Liu Yong's army was in chaos, and most of them drowned in the water; Liu Yong abandoned the city and went to Huling, and Su Mao fled to Guangle; Gaiyan pacified Pei, Chu, Linhuai, and other places, built the Gaozu Temple, and set up Shifu, Zhu Zai, and Musician to preside over the temple. By 27 AD, the Suiyang people gathered a crowd to rebel again, expelled the Han army, and welcomed back Liu Yong; Gai Yan was ordered to lead the generals to besiege for a hundred days, taking the method of collecting wheat from the field and cutting off Liu Yong's grain and grass, Liu Yong saw that the lack of grain was panicked and could not last, so he broke through and left, Gai Yan pursued, and won all his weight. Liu Yong was killed by his generals, and Liu Yong's brother Liu Fangju surrendered.

In the spring of 28 AD, Gaiyan attacked Su Mao and Zhou Jian in Pu County, and Jin fought with Dong Xian in Liu County, both of which broke the enemy. Dong Xianbu surrendered the city of Lanling to the Han army, but was besieged by Dong Xianfa's troops, and at that time Gai Yan and Pang Meng were in Chu and asked for help; Liu Xiu ordered: "You can go straight to Zhao Tan, and the siege of Lanling will be solved." This was the strategy of encircling Wei to save Zhao, but Gai Yan and others took the city into danger, so they went to Lanling first. As a result, Dong Xian was defeated and let Gai Yan wait to enter the city, and the next day the large army suddenly appeared to besiege Lanling; Gai Yan's army was afraid and hurried out of the city to break through, because of the attack on Tan. Liu Xiu scolded, "It turned out that the reason why you went to attack Tan first was unexpected by the enemy. Now that we have run away and the plan of the thief army has been established, can the siege of Lanling be solved?" Gai Yan waited until Tan County, but he could not attack it, and Dong Xian captured Lanling and killed Ben Xiu. Gai Yan and others invited Dong Xianbie to fight between Pengcheng, Tan, and Pi, or every day, and there were some gains. Liu Xiu went deeper into the lone army of the light enemy with Gaiyan and admonished him several times with edicts.

Later, the general Pang Meng rebelled, attacked and killed Taishou of Chu County, led the army to attack and defeat the Gaiyan Department, Gaiyan Cangchao fled, crossed Surabaya in the north, destroyed the boat, and dismantled the bridge, only to be spared. Liu Xiu, hearing of Pang Meng's rebellion, was furious and personally led an army on the Eastern Expedition, summoning Gai Yan to join forces with Sima Wuhan, the Hanzhong general Wang Chang, the former general Wang Liang, the capture general Ma Wu, and the general Wang Ba, to attack Pang Meng in Taoxiang, and from the conquest of Dong Xian to Changxuan, all of which were attacked before they were pacified. In 30 AD, Gaiyan was ordered to garrison Chang'an.

Fourth, the conquest of Long Shu Gong became famous:
In April 30, Emperor Liu Xiu of the Han Dynasty sent seven generals, including Geng Yi and Gai Yan, to attack Shu from Longdao, and Longyou Kuihu felt the crisis and turned his back on the Han army to send troops to resist Han, and then surrendered to Gongsun Shu of Shu. Emperor Guangwu then sent Sima Wuhan the Great Sima and the general Cen Peng to besiege Xicheng, the Jianwei general Geng Yi and the Huya general Gai Yan besieged Shangyi in pursuit of Kui Huan, while Emperor Guangwu himself returned to Luoyang. Later, because Gongsun Shu sent troops to rescue Kui Huan, Cen Peng's army was defeated, and at this time the Han army was in difficulty in supplying, the grain was exhausted, and the gaiyan, Wu Han, Geng Yi and other armies were forced to withdraw from Longxi; Kui Huan collected the remnants and occupied several counties in Longxi for a while.

In 33 CE, Kui Huan died and his son Kui Chun took the throne; Gai Yan was ordered to lead his army to attack Jiequan, Luoyang, Qingshui and other places in the west, all of which were pacified one by one; in August of the following year, Geng Yi and Kou Ke attacked the first city of Gaoping. In October, Lai She and Gai Yan joined forces to break through the gate, Wang Yuan fled to Gongsun Shu alone, and Kui Chun and his men surrendered (later Kui Chun fell into Hu and was arrested and killed). This battle lasted 4 years before Longxi was completely calmed. In the winter, the Xianzhi Qiang tribes that had previously supported Kui Huan invaded Longxi and other places, and Lai She led Gaiyan and others to attack the Xianzhi Qiang, killing thousands of people, opening warehouses to relieve hunger, and Longyou was stable. In 35 AD, GaiYan attacked Hechi with Zhonglang Fu she, but failed to conquer it; Gaiyan was led back by illness, worshiped Zuo Fengyi, and led the army as before. In 37 AD, Gaiyan increased the number of households in Fengyi, and in 39 AD, Gaiyan died of illness in office.

Summary: Gaiyan's own characteristics are biased towards the side of the brave and martial generals, and the overall ability is inferior to that of Feng Yi, Cen Peng, Lai She, and other generals who can stand alone; this kind of martial general has a straightforward personality, acts simply and has a slightly impatient temper, so Gaiyan has made up his own mind and did not listen to Liu Xiu's strategy, and only suffered defeat; and when fighting with Lai She, Lai She was stabbed by the assassin and was about to die, Gai Yan cried bitterly and could not look up; it could be seen that Gai Yan was a man of temperament and a straight man; until Lai She reprimanded him for crying, he needed him to take over the command of the army Gai Yan only suppressed his tears and reluctantly got up and accepted the instructions. Gai Yan's strength is incomparable, he fights bravely, rushes to kill the battlefield, and kills the enemy with countless meritorious achievements, and is a rare fierce general. Emperor Liu Zhuang of the Han Dynasty recalled the meritorious generals who accompanied his father to conquer the Eastern Han Dynasty, and ordered the portraits of twenty-eight heroes to be painted in yuntai of the Luoyang Southern Palace, and Gai Yan was listed among them for his battle achievements, and he was one of the eleventh of the twenty-eight generals of Yuntai.
