The beaded chicken of the janitor
In their native South Africa, the pearl chicken is a delicacy prey for predators such as leopards, jackals and eagles. Because this chicken-like bird always moves in flocks, it has evolved a loud angry cry that can alert companions when in danger. We humans are sometimes quite clever and think of a good way to use the beaded chicken instinct.
There are evil chickens inside
Long ago, indigenous people in Africa would keep beaded chickens outside their houses to warn them when they saw lions or other dangerous animals. Later, the beaded chicken was introduced to Europe as a food bird, and European farmers soon discovered that the beaded chicken was a good watchdog. As soon as a fox or eagle comes to hunt, the beaded chicken will bark, giving the chickens, ducks, geese and other animals on the farm a chance to quickly hide.
Nowadays, there are pearl chickens all over the world. They are highly reproducible, unlike other poultry, which require time to take care of, have low food requirements, and have become a well-received dish on the table in recent years. However, many people still mainly use them as watchbirds, because this special-looking bird not only makes a warning call when it sees predators, but also when it sees strangers.
But it is not only the people in the countryside who raise such a highly alert bird as a watchdog bird. One car dealership in London placed a small flock of beaded chickens as guards — effective, willing to work, and less expensive to raise.
