HotToys' Star Wars Clone Wars spin-off: Captain Rex's 1/6 scale commissible doll, recently available. I had a lot of fun after I got it, and HotToys' Star Wars dolls still did their best.
This time, HotToys' Captain Rex 1/6 scale figure is based on the setting of The Clone Wars Season 7. Originally, "Clone Wars" ended in 2013 (season 5), and then the partially completed season 6 was released through the Internet in 2014, and since then there has been no news, which has been officially recognized as the end. Unexpectedly, in 2020, it was resurrected by Di Baby and supplemented the 7th season. However, due to the relatively high continuity, Rex is not much different from the previous setting, so hotToys dolls have not changed much this time.
Rex is an original and popular character from the Star Wars animated series Clone Wars, a near-perfect clone soldier. He is a Clone Captain and an ARC Soldier (Senior Reconnaissance Commando, i.e. Elite Soldier), who led the 501st Legion Rapids to follow Anakin Skywalker and fellow Jedi apprentice Asoka Thano, who is also a popular original character, and has dedicated himself to both jedi commanders and clone comrades, and has a superb combat ability.
Because of these qualities, the character, who originally only appeared in the "Clone War", was expanded all the way, and the character's career was derived into the subsequent animation "Rise of the Rebels" and "Defective Squad". At the end of the Clone Wars, when Order 66 of the Jedi massacre was issued, the suppression chip in Rex's brain was removed by Ahsoka, who also broke away from the Clone army. In "Rise of the Rebels", Rex, who has aged due to the accelerated growth of clones, and the scene of Hisoka's reunion are also very moving. Later, the official also added that he participated in the Battle of Endor, which marked the fall of the Galactic Empire.
In addition to the rex's puppet body, it includes a live-action head sculpture, Anthoka's painted helmet, telescopes and night vision lights as accessories to the helmet, a flight backpack and jet effects, a chest equipment bag, a DC-17 explosive energy carbine, two DC-17 explosive pistols, a replacement hand, and a platform.
Among these accessories, the chest equipment bag can be attached to the right front chest, and the flight backpack can be attached to the back, all of which are applied with magnetic effect, which is very convenient to load and unload. Two explosive pistols can also be carried in a pistol bag on the waist. In this way, with the explosive energy carbine, it is Rex's full match. However, in fact, Rex usually uses two small guns, and carbines are not very commonly used.
In the past, the American model play brand Sideshow also launched Rex, and the shape design is basically the same as the hotToys version. However, the HotToys version of Rex's shoulder armor is glued to the breastplate, and the equipment bag is attached with magnets, while the Sideshow shoulder armor and the equipment bag are glued together and then worn around the neck. The Sideshow version of Rex also works poorly, the joints are softer, the joints are loose, and the playing experience is much worse than the HotToys version.
This version of Rex's prime body should use the same prime body as the previous 501 Legion Clone 1/6 ratio doll. This kind of body joints are tight, and the fit with the armor is high, and the mobility is also passable, which can more easily pose the iconic shape of the iconic chest with two hands crossed holding the gun.
The quality of the livery is also very high, and the various original painting and battle damage effects maintain hotToys' superb technology. Rex's body is covered with dense battle mark marks, representing his outstanding results against the robot troops (although it is still not comparable to Master Wendu, who has cut thousands of robots).
Rex's helmet is also quite distinctive, although it is the helmet of the second generation of clone armor, but it uses the eyepieces of the first generation of armor. The two pointed horns on the helmet are the Mandalorian's common symbol, the Jaig Eyes, which is said to have been granted to him by a Mandalorian who trained clones.
With the help of the included tools, helmet attachment telescopes and night vision lights can be easily mounted on several recent 501 Legion related helmets, including Rex's own helmet, Asokalian helmet, and 501 Legion helmet. As for the included Asokarin helmet, I'll talk about it later.
In addition, whether the Rex doll kneels on one leg or makes a flying gesture with the help of the platform (at this time, it can be equipped with spray special effects), it is more relaxed and comfortable, and the playability is very good.
But even so, this HotToys version of the Rex doll still has some unsatisfactory places. One is the armor that Rex wears, the old part is permeated with a strange green color, and it will be especially obvious if the photo is not handled. The second is that the Kama robe hanging from Rex's waist equipment belt is too small, which is smaller than the shape in the animation or the official picture released by HotToys in the early stage.
HotToys' Star Wars products have two changes that do not conform to the original design, which is still rare. Especially the Kama robe part, this kind of equipment that improves the aesthetics of the shape, not only made small, but also used a stretch cloth very little, and the Sideshow is leather, which gives me a greater gap.
As the original character of the anime, Rex is set to be a good partner with Commander Cody. The clone Cody appeared as Obi-Wan's aide-de-camp in the prequel star wars episode Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, directing his men to shell Obi-Wan after Order 66 was issued. Cody's setting is also enriched in the Clone Wars animation, and when Anakin and Obi-Wan join forces, Rex and Cody will also provide firm support behind the scenes.
HotToys has already launched Cody's dolls before, and now the two good partners can work together again. And both of their live-action head eagles are very good, especially Rex, because he has not appeared in live-action works, so there has always been only an animated image, this time HotToys also let us see how Rex's live-action image should be.
As mentioned earlier, This version of HotToys' Rex is based on the setting of The Clone Wars Season 7. The most fascinating part of this season is the birth of Asokalian. Originally, Asoka left because of her disappointment with the Jedi Order, but returned to seek Anakin's help in order to hunt down former Sisdas Moore, who had secretly controlled Mandalo. Rex led a part of the 501st Army to assist in capturing Moore, and 332 companies of them, in order to welcome Ahsoka's return, painted their helmets in a pattern similar to Ahsoka's face. That's why both the 501 Legion clones before HotToys and the Rex dolls this time will come with an Asoka-painted helmet.
Rex leads the team to welcome Ahsoka, which is a classic scene of this plot and the selling point of HotToys' launch of related products. I can't afford to buy so many clones, but I can restore it with the help of PS.
As mentioned earlier, I have also received Rex from Sideshow, and this time the HotToys version will be very awkward after getting started, and in addition to the size and texture of the Karma robe, the old version is a total failure, and I don't want to have two Rex in hand. Fortunately, not long ago, I found a very powerful craftsman, made a set of ARC soldier accessories (including shoulder armor, chest equipment pack, enhanced breastplate, replacement forearm armor and calf armor, enhanced shoe armor), and then with this cloned helmet and helmet attachments, a new ARC soldier was born.
Anyway, although arc soldiers are more powerful and better equipped than ordinary clones (see), they are also more free to do whatever they want in terms of livery and accessories, so don't worry too much about the setting problem, so that the Rex squad has one more person on hand, and continue to wait for the arrival of Commander Ahsoka.
