Zhu Jiayun

Zhu Jiahuan (1914-2003), also known as Ji Huang, a native of Xiaoshan, Zhejiang, was the 25th-generation grandson of the Song dynasty scholar Zhu Xi, who grew up in Beijing. He had deep roots in his family and was hired as a special committee member as early as the beginning of the establishment of the Palace Museum.

During his work at the Forbidden City, Zhu Jiayun's research scope was extremely extensive, including calligraphy, famous paintings, inscriptions, porcelain, opera, lacquerware, architecture, furniture, gardening, etc., making outstanding contributions to the preservation and rediscovery of Chinese culture.

Zhu Jiahuan restored the emperor's throne

In 1915, Yuan Shikai, a thief who stole the country, usurped power and became emperor, removed the original Qing Emperor's throne carved dragon and gold chair in the Taihe Hall of the Forbidden City, retained the carved dragon and gold screen behind the chair, and installed a special, Chinese and Western combination, and a large chair in front of the screen, with a very high back and a very short seat.

Later, due to the turmoil in state affairs, this "Yuan's Great Chair" has been standing on the throne of the Taihe Hall.

Since then, the Qing Emperor's throne carved dragon and gold chair has disappeared.

It was not until 1947, when the Palace Museum planned to remove Yuan Shikai's fake dragon chair and replace it with the original real dragon chair, that it was found that the dragon chair was missing. Therefore, Zhu Jiazhuo, who was a researcher at the Palace Museum at the time, began to search the whole city for the Dragon Chair of the Forbidden City.

In 1959, Zhu Jiahuan saw the original state of the former Taihe Hall on an old photograph of guangxu in 26 years (1900). So according to this photo, I searched further, and finally found a broken golden carved dragon chair in a warehouse where broken furniture was stored.

However, the broken dragon chair did not meet the requirements of the exhibition, and Zhu Jiayu led the team to carry out the restoration of the dragon chair.

In a full year, Zhu Jialuan's restoration team spent 766 working days doing wood, copper and carving. In September 1964, the restoration of the dragon chair was completed, and 934 working days were shared for each type of work.

The restored dragon chair was finally displayed on the throne of the Taihe Hall, blending in with the carved dragon and gold screen.

According to the records, it took Zhu Jiayu more than four years to find this dragon chair, and it took nearly three years to preside over the restoration work.

Zhu Jiayun said that the emperor's throne in the Taihe Hall is the center of the Forbidden City, and it should be maintained in its original state, if it is lying, how can it be worthy of so many spectators at home and abroad all day long, let people see fake goods, this is the shame of our people who do museums.

In this way, Zhu Jiayu did it all his life in the Forbidden City. Until the 1970s, Zhu Jiayun, who was in his early 60s, was still busy working on cultural relics in the red walls and green tiles of the Forbidden City. He said of himself: "I am not a competent expert, I am a museum worker. ”

An unexpected decision:

Donated Furniture to the Zhu Family Mansion

The Zhu family of Shuxiang Mendi has ancestral four-wall books and various cultural relics. In the book "Father's Voice" written by Zhu Chuanrong, it was mentioned that the family collected dozens of large-scale wood tools of Ming Dynasty rosewood, huanghuali woodware and Qing Dynasty Qianlong workmanship rosewood.

These cultural relics with a history of hundreds of years are handed down from the ancestors of the Zhu family, and his father Zhu Jiayu loves them even more like life.

According to Zhu Chuanrong, Zhu Jiahuan's daughter, there was a time when she found that there were often some prime-age men guarding the entrance to their courtyard at No. 34 Banchang Hutong, creeping inward. These men dodged and dodged, and often as soon as they saw Zhu Chuanrong appear at the door, they scattered as birds and beasts, and did not dare to continue to watch.

But as soon as Zhu Chuanrong entered the house, they quietly gathered at the door again. It turned out that everyone had heard that Zhu Jiaxuan was an expert in the Forbidden City, and they all felt that their family must have a lot of valuable good things, and some of them actually had the idea of selling it.

In order to prevent these furniture from being sold back and being exiled overseas, Zhu Jiahuan made a decision that shocked the whole family and donated! Therefore, one day in 1976, Zhu Jiayun donated Zhu Jiamantang furniture and cultural play to chengde mountain resort.

The cultural relics donated by the Zhu family are all fine products, not only valuable, but also these cultural relics have accompanied the growth of Zhu Jiaxuan, who has a very deep affection for these furniture.

As a person who has made outstanding contributions to the cause of cultural and cultural undertakings and the protection of traditional culture in China, Zhu Jiayun rarely mentions his views on the cultural relics he donated. We can only seek answers from what he has said and written.

Zhu Jiahuan once said: "Ancient artifacts are gathered and scattered, and some are scattered and gathered." Gathering is a joy, and scattering and getting what you want is also a pleasure. It is not easy for a collection to accompany the collector's life, and can the children and grandchildren always preserve it for a family and a surname? ”

Zhu Jiazhuo also said in "The Painting Biography of Famous Chinese Artists - Zhu Jiaxuan": "I am often asked, why should I donate, why not keep a hand?" I have tried to answer in various ways, but the other party is still not satisfied, and I feel that I am still not finished. It wasn't until I saw the joint text written by the ancestor Zhu Fengbiao, "Planting trees and Cultivating Jia disciples, embracing the right to worship the little princes", that I felt that I had not exhausted my meaning. ”

Daughter Zhu Chuanrong inherited the mantle of her father Zhu Jiaxuan and became an editor of the Palace Publishing House.

She said in the book: "The art or cultural relics collected by the family, it is not property, it embodies what people appreciate, it is the essence of culture over many years, it is not something that you alone or a family have privately owned." This thing should have been produced in this cultural environment, so it should not be dispersed to other places, from my grandfather and my father's generation, everyone in this generation. Our generation, first, should respect their right to deal with their own things, and secondly, we all approve of them doing so. ”

It is more useful to give knowledge to future generations than to leave behind other tangible wealth. What Zhu Chuanrong learned from her father Zhu Jiaxuan is undoubtedly the most precious wealth, which is the echo of her father's voice in her.

Unlike the nuance of maternal love, the father's love is deep and subtle. It will be hidden in flowers, wine, shadows, sounds, children's hearts, silences and all other things that are not easy to detect, waiting for your awareness, awakening and discovery.

In the upcoming "Father's Love Like a Mountain" series of programs, famous writers Zhu Ziqing, Wang Zengqi, Xiao Fuxing, Jia Pingwo, Lin Haiyin, Chi Zijian, etc., with their personal experience, keen tentacles and extraordinary talents, use words to outline the depth and breadth, forbearance and intensity of father's love.
