On July 11, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was invited to visit Britain.

Yuri Alexievich Gagarin (March 9, 1934 – March 27, 1968) was a Soviet cosmonaut and a colonel pilot of the Soviet Red Army, the first to go into space.
At 9:07 a.m. Moscow time on April 12, 1961, Gagarin set sail from the Baiknur launch site on the Vostok 1 spacecraft, circled the earth in an orbit with a maximum altitude of 301 kilometers, lasted 1 hour and 48 minutes, and returned safely at 10:55 a.m., landing in the area of Smelovka village in Saratov Oblast, completing the world's first manned space flight and realizing the wish of mankind to enter space.
After gagarin returned to Earth, he became a veritable hero of the Soviet Union, and Gagarin was awarded the Order of Lenin and was awarded the titles of "Hero of the Soviet Union" and "Cosmonaut of the Soviet Union".
