Yunnan is a famous animal and plant kingdom, with more than 700 species of butterflies, ranking first in the country. However, in the land of only more than 100 square kilometers at the bottom of the saddle, there are more than 400 species of butterflies such as arrow ring butterfly, phoenix eye butterfly, dead leaf butterfly, white band saw butterfly, brown hook butterfly, beak phoenix butterfly, purple spotted ring butterfly, and beautiful phoenix butterfly.

The largest number of butterflies in Ma'andi Township is the Arrow Ring Butterfly, which is an indigenous butterfly at the bottom of the Saddle, which has extremely strict requirements for the ecological environment and can be described as an indicative insect of the ecological environment. The brownish yellow wings have black spots in the shape of arrows on one side and red circles like arrow targets on the other side, hence the name.
According to ecological principles, the sudden explosive growth of a certain animal's population must be a major change in the factors restricting it in the environment, and after this outbreak, it usually returns to its original normal state for a certain period of time.
So why is the population of butterflies at the bottom of the saddle so large every year and for many years?
Ma'andi Township is located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer, belongs to the transition area between the northern tropics and the south subtropics, the average annual temperature is about 18 °C, the forest coverage rate is 67%, and the altitude is from the confluence of the Red River and the Longneck River at an altitude of 105 meters to the summit of Mount Wutai at 3012 meters. Because of the large altitude difference, obvious three-dimensional climate, rich forest resources, and a basic ecological environment suitable for the survival of butterflies, it has created the possibility of a large outbreak for butterflies.
